  1. Here is my 2021 VR125B purchased in March.  Maybe the format change has something to do with the Pure Fishing take over.  Also, the boxes were updated with Pure Fishing and there was no longer any paperwork enclosed.

I bought it at Peace Token Fishing Tackle in Cape May Court House, NJ.  It was the only 50 that they had back in September.  There are websites that list 50’s with their 2021 versions and 50’s are not listed with the original versions.  According to Tackle Direct theirs are updated, but I’m really not sure.

Mine is serial number 00111.  I don’t get it.

Where’d you get your updated one from? Does anyone know if they updated the silver one too? I’m curious if every retailer is already selling the new one or not

  4. One thing for sure, Van Staal did a horrible job communicating the details and timeline of the update.  I purchased my VR50B in September 2020 and it was an updated version.  According to what I saw here, the update was not supposed to happen until Spring 2021 or later, at least that’s my understanding of what was communicated buy VS.

  5. I have the 842S F, 843S F and the 844S F.  I also had the previous non-IMX 844.  I love them.   I use the 844 for bait fishing when you need to drop a lot of weight.  It will also toss heavier lures nicely.  The other two are great for lighter lures.  I’ve also had the 845C from both series and really like them as well but I didn’t fish conventional enough to justify keeping them.  I also had a St Croix Legend Inshore and have fished with St Croix Tidemasters and much prefer the Pro Blues, it’s just a shame they are so expensive.

    5/8” old

    11/16” new

tve easiest way to tell without opening it up is The extra 1/16 is made up on the handle side cover… So the new version has a bigger side cover on the handle side as opposed to the older version have equal size covers on each side.

Thanks!!!  You have confirmed that I have the latest and greatest!  And I was thinking of selling it, not now.

There are two bodies in circulation as of now, (one is slightly thicker) a member here in another thread actually posted them side x side. But thats all I know, I don't think he ever got to measuring them.

Thanks!  Now to find that post…

  8. Yep,agreed.   I bought my VR125B in March and it was upgraded The 50B’s were on that website as available 2021 versions.  They had the original VR’s listed separately and there were never any 50B’s listed as originals to my knowledge.

New body and gears is probably cost prohibitive

True.  I’m just still a bit confused.  I saw at least one other post that says the body of the 50 is not thicker with the updated gear.  Some websites are selling the 50’s along with the other models as 2021’s and have been since I bought mine.  It may not matter, but I bought it after the Pure Fishing take over and the packaging reflects that.  There really isn’t too much good info coming from Van Staal.

Rep told my shop owner the opposite. All VR50b currently being shipped out will be upgraded with larger gears. Any that are already in stores likely aren't upgraded. Partly the reason for the delay in getting them out to shops.

Thanks.  Of course the next question is can the the old ones be upgraded and for how much.

  11. Agreed.  I was told by a respected long time Van Staal dealer that the VR50B’s were current and not being updated.  They did not say anything specifically regarding the updated gears.  I’ve also seen different things here on SOL and that the new gears would fit in the old body and it sounds like Craig may have said different things.  It sure would be nice to know if I had the current version.

  12. It is in all but new condition.  It was built by a very talented builder with the best components at the time, Fuji TI, SI guides.  It comes with a custom rod sock to fit the 70/30 pieces. Unfortunately, it does have my name on it but I’m sure it can be removed by someone that knows what they’re doing.   Honestly, I’m not sure how to price it, but here are some pictures…
