  1. First owner rod manufactured in 2013 from serial number, regestered and under warrenty Great conditon $230 meet up anywhere on long island -Kurt
  2. Yeah I probably should have specified when I said, max. All of the screws are snug And even, to the point where tightening them more could screw the reel up. I've had that happen before too. Spacers? Where would I add those too? The handle side bearing post? Would that create less play in the spool and sideplates? Thanks
  3. Hey guys, I don't really know whats up with this on my longbeach, thought you guys might know whats up. Ive serviced this reel with new washers, and cleaned and regreased it in all the nessisary places, but than when all the screws are tightened to max, and even the left side knob used to adjust the tension is max as well, the spool is still wobbling back and fourth a 8th of an inch or so. Its still fishable, but if I tilt the reel to one side it won't freespool as long as it should. It used to be where id have the knob 3/4 of the way down then the spool would barely move, so I would give it a little more slack till the spool can just BARELY move side to side, for maximum freespool. Does anyone know whats up? I thought it was the new side rings, as they don't fit perfectly. The old rings pushed on the sideplate would be flush with it, but the new ones made the reel a bit thicker and they are not deep enough to put on the sideplate. But I changed the rings back to original and the problem was the same. It has all original parts. Thanks
  4. And 60 lb is ok? Has anyone had breakoffs casting 8 oz and bait? I thougt that for every ounze of weight it should be 10lbs of line. I do know what you mean by the size of the knot compared to the guides though, they sure are tiny.
  5. Yeah I actually went to my local bait and tackle store, and they had both models. The avet is just... I dont know. Its not really as smooth as i'd like it to be. Both high and low gear settings felt kinda funny to me. I tested them side by side, and the fathom just seems a bit nicer in smoothness. The live spindle of the fathom was actually VERY good. The thing wouldn't stop spinning. Freespool wasn't as smooth on even the lowest mag setting. I think i'l stick will penn again.
  6. and with an 8 oz sinker at max and two ounce chunk of bait at max, at 10 ozs should my shock leader be 100 lbs? Il be using flouro
  7. I also have a question about lever drag reels. Does the spool completely disengage the pinion gear on these types of reels, as the penn fathom does with its "live spindle" feauture?
  8. Yeah thanks for steering me in the right direction guys. I think I am going to do the two speed option though, only for versatillity. I can stick it on my boat rod too in the future. The mxl series does look better for what I'm doing anyway. Im going to save up, pick this up in the purple color, get 300 yards of 65lb suffix 832 and slap it on my 12' casting st. croix mojo. Perfect combo.
  9. The avet has 15 pounds of drag compared to the fathom at 25, so is 15 pounds of drag ok for casting from the beach for blues and stripers?

Oh ok, thanks for the clarification about the brakes. The line capacity is very simalar for the two reels, is the avet that much smaller? The avet can hold 420 yards of 50 lb braid and the fathom 25n can hold 450 yards of 50 lb braid.
  11. Hey guys, I was origianlly looking at a fathom 25n to pick up for my 12 footer, but after seeing the features of this reel I may be having my doubts. The Avet is 100 dollars more than the Penn, but made in the USA, plus the two speed function and EXTERNAL magnetic cast control. Does anyone have experience with these two reels? They both look awesome, but what do you guys think us the better reel? And I also have a question about avet's mag control. Is there an off setting for it at all? I know you can completely disengage the magnet control of a fathom if you just want to thumb it, but I'm not sure if you can on the avet. Like does the 1 setting even slow the spool down that much? After I start to get a bit better will always having it on 1 setting be killed potential max yards compared to just thumbing it? Will I still have to kind of thumb it anyway? Thanks in advance for the help.
  12. I am a new surfcaster, but my familly and relatives have all used Penn reels since anyone can remember. They are tough, built to last, and are very very easy to work on. Conventional or spinning, old or new. I use them all. I don't see the need to buy foreign fishing goods, the stuff are guys make here is great. I own a Penn battle 6000, which is about 110 bucks. As long as I wash it out with freshwater and put anti corrosian stuff on it after use It should last a long time. No problems. Its braid ready and the smaller 4000 sized reel has 13 lb of drag. The 4000 sized battle is 85 bucks. Another penn option more near your cost, that ive only heard about were the penn spinfisher V reels. It's an even better reel but closer to the 150. I just have experience with the battle
  13. Hey guys. I just really got into surf fishing this season, and I really love it. I tried plugging and chunking, too see what my preferance was, and I can't chose between either, I love them both. I have my plugging set up at ready, and I have used that many many times, I love it. I try to go out as much as possible. I light bait fish for porgy's to eat or for bait, and sometimes I catch nice sized eels and just keepable porgys and wish I had 12' conventional set up to throw them out, to try for stripers and blues. I then bought a 12' heavy surf rod, from one of SOL's sponser's stingray tackle. I enjoyed casting conventional, and like fishing with it. It was about 110 bucks on there website. I liked the rod, but one problem kept bugging me. The first eyelet did not line up with the reel seet, lets say a quarter of an inch tilited. I tried to get used to it, but it such a bother i sent it back. I am currently looking for a nice 12' light preferably graphite surf pole. Id like it capable to throw as much lead as needed for heavy setups. You guys give the best advice, so i figured i'd ask to see what the avid guys are using, what they'd reccomend. I'm willing to spend 300 max. I looked a St. croix's mojo series casting rod, as the mojo is my main pluging rod and i love it, but the 70/30 split is unbearable. I love the one peice feel, and Its ok for my 10' rod, 7 foot and 3 foot sections, but the 12' mojo has a 8.4 foot long section. That just won't fit in my car, and i store all my Rods in socks in a Flambeau bazooka rod tube, and stick that in the SUV I drive around. 8.4 is just too long, so il just go the conventional 50/50 split, two 6 foot sections if possible. Anyone know a good rod for me? I will be pairing this with a Penn non level-wind fathom 30 reel. Thanks in advance guys.
