  1. Nice pics. Thanks. Picked up some similar clousers/deceivers with both gold and silver eyes (could not find any ghosts, though) from Outdoor Provision Co. in Chapel Hill. Will let you know how it goes. All one big experiment for me right now.
  2. Have not tried poppers for spanish/blues, but it looks like it would do the trick. Headed to Orvis in Raleigh tomorrow...
  3. I have heard/seen the same thing about the inlet. Too dang hot and still -- the fish have gone to florida to cool off. Also, I am starting to get more and more worried about the PCS Phosphate impact on the inlet and estuaries. Will be surf fishing for first trip (including kayak), then will be in inlet later in the year. I hope the fish come back. Will send Joe a message when I get closer to the time. Thanks.
  4. I agree on the suspending technique. I became a convert by accident one year as a boy -- my parents went out of town for a week and left my brother and me down at beach (18 and 16) by ourselves. We spent our entire allowance on beer and women by the second day, so we had to scrounge for whatever food we could come by. We owned a sunfish sailboat and decided that launching it in the surf, then trolling off the back of the sunfish with two clarkspoons was a good idea. We caught dozens, but only when we came about and the spoon fluttered to the bottom. We fed ourselves beer and spanish (and women) for the rest of the week -- I guess that would now be called a suspending technique... And yes, if this happened today we would have been on Channel 9 news as poor abandoned kids and our parents thrown in jail for abuse. Instead, we just had a blast, bonded and survived...
  5. Nevermind, missed Charlie2's post. A photo would be outstanding if you have the time. Also, any thoughts on hook size?
  6. Great recommendation -- we have tons of them in the sand/surf here. Any thoughts on a fly that mimics them?
  7. Thanks, Phaedrus. Very consistent with other online research, which includes Clousers and Deceivers, but was not sure of color/pattern. I have also seen a couple of Orvis "saltwater packs" that include a selection of 6 streamer patterns. Looks more like striper flies, but they should work with blues, too. Much appreciated. H
  8. Thanks, I have been doing some research online and have come across deceivers, clousers and surf candies. I like the size and look of them -- reminds me a lot of the spoons and gotchas we use down here. Son-of-Blond sounds awesome, even if just for the name! Headed down in late July, which I fully expect to SUCK as we have had nothing but hot dry weather, but will get out and practice. The late August/early September should be much better. Will post pics if I have any luck. Tight lines. h
  9. Posted in the Fly Fishing Forum as well, but figured there may be some additional help here in the NC Boards: Headed to Atlantic Beach, NC this summer/fall and looking for recommendations for fly patterns for blues/spanish/pompano. Will be surf casting and on a kayak. 9 ft./9 wt gear. I have been surf fishing for years and typically will use clark/hopkins/gotcha/topwater plugs when they are schooling. New to saltwater fly fishing, though. Thanks!!

  11. Sorry if my post was not clear -- Atlantic Beach is about 100 miles south of Corolla as the seagull flies. However, it is a world away given the different currents (Labrador vs. gulf stream). While some of the fish mentioned may not be available in AB, they may be running in Corolla given the temperature change.
  12. Late August down near Atlantic Beach is a little early for bluefish and spanish, but you can catch them. Typically from surf, it would be a small hopkins or clark spoon (or similar) -- generally anything that looks like a silverside or glass minnow. I agree with SpeckHunter -- given the size of the state, Atlantic Beach has different currents and water temperature that time of year. The blues, stripers, spanish may have already arrived. If so, bigger blues and stripers will get aggressive and hit a top plug. If you are going to fish near jetties/structure/inlets, then consider simple bottom rigs with shrimp or cut mullet (or live bait) for drum, striper and flounder. There are lots of options - surf, jetty, inlet, sound. Check in this forum a week before you go to see what folks are catching and with what. Also check local fishing websites and fishing companies. Have fun.
