  1. AWT makes very good batteries, and they have large capacity with high amp ratings. I have personal experience with their 40A 3000mah battery and can say it is fantastic. THey also have a 35A 3500mah battery that i have not used but know people who have put them through the ringer and they performed well. Samsung 25r is a quality battery, but they dont seem to have the longevity of the AWT or Sony. As far as Sony goes I have several of their older VTC5 batteries and they are hands down the best batteries I have ever owned, but they have changed them so not so sure any more. I know people who have used the new VTC5A and VTC6 and love them, but the VTC6 is only 15A so it depends on your flashlight wether it will be sufficient.
  2. I just picked up the Savage 93FV for a beater gun around the farm. I was very pleased with the accuracy of the gun. At 100 yards my son could not miss clay pigeons while he was shooting. It has a good balance with the varmit barrel. At a local shop i got the gun, a 4x9 Burris scope with weaver rings for $368. Hard to beat for the money
  3. I have 2 of the 12' spinning ugly sticks, and they do make great chunking rods. They are very heavy and the slow action makes it undesirable for me to cast. They are virtually indestructible and cheap, but i cannot imagine throwing plugs with it. For a few dollars more get a penn prevail, a much nicer stick for throwing plugs (compared to the uglystik). If you want to take another step up to a much nicer rod go with the Battalion. I have been very impressed with the 9' i bought this fall.
  4. Smallest we have is a six, and we will be taking both. I will definitely try the six first, but I am brushing up on the 12 just in case.
  5. Thanks for the info. Being our first trip we will have some feeling out to do, but thanks for the info on the tides blocking you. We will have to keep an eye on stuff like that. Not sure what parts we will be fishing until we get there and give it an eye test. Hopefully we will be able to net some bait in the sound. I have been practicing with the throw nets. Its been a while since I have to throw a 12'
  6. Thank you. I never thought about a walmart. I generally don't like frozen but I guess it will have to do until we can catch some fresh with nets on the island. You didn't happen to notice if there were any mullet in the sound to be had. Seems like they have been few and far between on Hatteras since Matthew came through?
  7. My father and I are heading to PI on Nov 4, and we were wandering were the best place to get bait on the way down is. We will be catching the 7:00 AM ferry. The marina told us to call a few days ahead and check if they had bait, but from what I have heard from other discussions is not to rely on them having bait. We are looking to pick up some mullet and shrimp. Is there a place that is open that early in the area? Thanks for any help that can be given.
  8. colt king cobra . I have the smith and a ruger gp100, and prefer the colt over the other two. Something about the way it balances in my hand.
  9. I just got back from the OBX , and while I was down there I stopped in and talked to Ryan at Hatteras Jacks, He was showing me some of the new blanks from Century, and I think he had just what you are looking for. I didn't ask the model but he was telling my dad ( who is 68)that you did not even have to put any effort behind it and it would launch 8oz without a shock leader. Go to a century dealer and ask about what blank suits you and I am sure they can give you more info
  10. The orange tires are angler's brand and they get the job done. I bought a cart with them on it and use it at OBX in the deep soft sand and it pulls great with heavy loads. Never used wheelez but I cannot imagine they could work muck better. you can find the anglers, both tires, axle and mounting hardware for under $150
  11. I was going through the same thing a couple years ago, and after checking out this site I decided to make myself a creek and river belt. After fishing with a backpack for a while I realized how big of a pain it was getting to the stuff I needed when I am wading in the middle of a creek or river. After studying some of the surf belts on here I made this. It has everything right at hand. Pliers, knife, camera, water bottle, tackle bag and i used a cheap cortland fly box for hooks, jigs, clips and such. Plus i reconstructed a hammer loop with codura so the rivets would not poke holes in my waders. The hammer loop is the best because when you are unhooking a fish in the middle of a river or creek you just put you fishing rod there and have two hands to deal with the fish. it also works well for changing lures in the water. I have a smaller bag for trout fishing and the larger bag( not attached) when I river fish and have more species to chase. Make or buy yourself a rig like this and you will wonder why you did not do this years ago.
  12. For farm trout use 1/32 oz jig head with 3" berkely powerbait troutworm in pink shad or bubblegum. For native trout 1/32 oz jig head with either 1" or 2 1/2" berkely gulp minnow Have outfished berkely doughbait and fly fisherman using these two combos, plus it is easy and not much tackle
  13. back in 1997 at hatteras they still let the commercial fishermen run nets from the beach straight out into the surf about 100yds or so. we had just loaded up all the reels with the new spiderwire fusion line, and apparently one of the nets lost its anchor and floated down into my rig. fought that thing for a while until it came ashore full of fish, gill netted. We took a couple of fish for dinner and called park rangers. Didn't go back to OBX until they stopped letting them do that, because they were posted about every tenth of a mile.
  14. Number one choice for me is the fenwick river runner 6'8" fast action. I have been using it for two years fishing trout and smallmouth in small creek and rivers for two years. I throws a 1/16 jig like nothing else i have ever seen, and I have tried the st croix premier, it is lacking compared to the fenwick. As far as the BPS microlite graphite rod go, i have the 6'6" Fast UL. I used it for about a year before I could afford the fenwick. It is a nice rod for the money. IMHO it is just as good as the st corix premier. it has a large grip which sits well in the hand, and can handle fish. My son landed a 3lb native rainbow out of a fast moving stream with it when he was 8. Hand down if you have the money go with the fenwick. The grip sits in the hand so well and it has the closest thing to a fast action you will see in an ultra light
