    Civil Engineer
  1. The boat fishing on the outer cape was great. The shore fishing could not have been worse. SEALS SEALS SEALS.... They eat a lot of bass. At some point, the fish understand that the shore = danger & they stay off the shore. I think the sand eels have also been pushed off. The amount of sand eels two to three hundred yards off of Race point was amazing this year, yet you could not rake one in close.
  2. Fished the race & backside from 9/19 thru 9/26 - caught two blues & one short bass all week. Very sad. We've been fishing there for over twenty years. It's never been worse. The only difference see is the seals & lack of sand eels in close. I can't understand why the sand eels are not in by hatches when they have been realy thick out where the boats are. The boat fishing is still good, so there are fish, but they don't want to come close anymore. There are about twenty of us from upstate NY who fished that week & the total was about 10 keeper bass the whole time. Most were caught on 9/19 in the early am with the big surf.
  3. I brought my dog to the vet the other day & I asked him how many Lyme dogs he treated last year. He said 50 to 60 & 95% of the ticks he tested werew Lyme positive. My wife has had Lyme twice & the tests are highly unreliable. The Western Blot came up negative twice & then full blown positive the third time. The CDC , at this point, still recommends treatment with antibiotics if a bulls eye rash is present, or if the test is positive. As a result a lot of doc.s will not treat based on symptons & a lot of peolple suffer as a result. I have read that the CDC is considering changing their recommendation, to treat on symtons, but I am not sure if they will actually do this.
  4. Belive it or not, I actually ran over an otter about 15 years ago. I was traveling from Albany, NY back to the Catskills at night. I was going 55 on Route 209 next to the Rondout Creek, when I saw something long & brown shoot out from under the guiderail directly in front of me. I barely had time to touch the brakes, when I ran it over. I had a Honda Civic at the time & I never touiched it with the wheels. I guess, from the thumping noises I heard, the front suspension did him in. I had no idea what I had just run over, so I stopped & got out and discovered it was a big otter. It was in the same condition as these two, no blood, no nothing, just dead. I dragged it off the road & went on my way. I felt bad, but what could I do, it happened. One good thing is that if they are getting run over, it's a pretty good sign that there are more of them around. BTW I'm glad that the police are strict on the Cape. The streets are narrow & the traffic is heavy. People need to respect life more & not drive like idiots. It seems to me that the closer you get to dense population centers, the worse people drive. They are just in too musch of a hurry all the time.
  5. Don't the little fellers winter over in the CT river & the Housatonic?
  6. Or, a localized O2 deficiency due to a WWTP mishap. Or an illeagal toxics dump.
  7. In addition to venting you should where a respirator that has filters rated for lead fumes. Also, don't let the kids near the operation. The fumes will get into the lungs & then into the blood, ect. It's bad stuff when it's in you. I remember opening the split shot with my teeth as a kid. That could explain some things about me. Good luck & tight lines.
  8. Awesome stuff! Last September you could see them from the beach but never that close. The whales are great, but the bait really gets my blood pumping. Four more weeks to our Spring visit. I can't wait!
  9. Sept. '01 or was it '02 Race Pt. Massive Schools of peanuts w/ large cruising through the middle of them. If you could land a Kastmaster a couple feet in front of the fish, you were on.
  10. It's the most awesome feeling in one's life! Congrats!
  11. Grampy, They are getting to be quite common in the catskill mountains here in NY. I usally see them two or three times during the fall hunting season. They are fun to watch.
  12. for sight casting to tuna w/ a spinning reel. I just bought the Fin-nor AHAB OFS95. It's rated for 600 yds. of 100# braid. I like power pro, but I was wondering if the 80# would be better than the 100# for casting/capacity reasons. I'm up on the reg.s & have been fishing the cape for 20+ years. I am new to tuna fishing though. Any help from experienced tuna guys would be appreciated.
  13. The signifigance of sea lice lice is that it takes lot of them to meke a meal The wire does not have the belly it like leadcore. Hence you get a nice crisp action when you jig it. Leadcore will not give you the crisp action.
