  1. I went to the Bill Burton Fishing Pier at the Choptank yesterday, May 4th. We must have caught 15 catfish, channels and blues. All were around 23 inches or so, so that was fun. caught those on chopped Manhaden. White perch were also biting blood worms and I got a decent number of keepers in my casting net. Didn't get any manhaden or alowi in my net this time... kind of disappointed because I love live lining them. I caught 2 decently large eels as well as a fish that I couldn't identify. Can anyone provide an ID for this? it has smooth skin like a manhaden, doesn't feel scaly at all. It also has 2 feelers beneath its gills... long body, was about 8 inches long, sharp teeth and had long fins on the back top and bottom half of its body.. lastly, it had a small black fin right above its gills.
  2. And... my Saturday just refilled. /sigh being an adult sucks. Maybe another time.
  3. Hey Hay, I think my saturday just cleared up, would you be up for fishing then?
  4. That sounds like an awesome opportunity! I'm a pier fisher who has always wanted to go out on a boat, but my weekend schedule is busy for the next few weeks... how frequently do you go out? I will definitely contact you again when I can start really fishing again
  5. Thanks for the update! Not too worried about the lack of rockfish, can't catch them legally there yet anyways heh. Didn't use any fish chunks or anything? I tend to catch a bunch of cats when I do... far fewer with squid, but maybe that is just my luck heh
  6. Any update on your catch Vtbear? I'm itching to hear whats biting heh
  7. I always use circle hooks to begin with, so I shouldn't have issues and I'll keep my camera handy if it turns out to be a monster, but it will def be back in the water asap lol and I'm gonna keep the e-mail from DNR handy if I need to prove anything. I just wanna fish again and June just seems so far away lol
  8. Well I contacted DNR, they said to go ahead and fish however you want, just to release any bass immediately. I'm now asking if cutting the line is necessary, but I guess they aren't super strict on the subject.
  9. I recall seeing that catch and releasing striped bass at this time of the year is illegal at large spawning areas. First question is, does the Choptank River fall into that category? I'm thinking yes, I just wanted to verify. Also, what if you aren't trying to catch the bass, you just do? I kind of want to go out and catch some cat fish just for the fun of it, but I don't want to be accused of targeting bass or anything like that since they both love manhaden. Thanks for any help!
  10. lol yea black drum get crazy big. That is why I wanna catch one! I'm definitely going to keep trying to catch it from the pier. I've seen it done, and now with the info I gathered from here, maybe I can pull it off =D I just wish it was the right time of the year for it right now... I really wanna get back out there!
  11. I live in Germantown, and yea Black Hills is nice. Can even rent boats if you don't have your own. If you are looking for stripers, I've had decent luck at the Bill Burten Fishing pier over at Choptank and Kent Narrows near the bay bridge, although Kent Narrows gets crowded during peak fishing season. I don't have a boat, so these are both piers. Bring a drop net if you go to the Choptank pier.
  12. Yea this would be really useful. It takes me like 2 hours to get to my fishing spot... will be totally worth it if I know something is biting lol
  13. wow that sounds awesome! If I had a boat I would totally try that... for now I just want to catch one haha.
  14. Thanks for the input! I just read the term "shock leader" online where it described exactly what you pointed out, it helps when casting. But they also mentioned that it will absorb the shock from a fighting fish as well. But you bring up a good point, I'm not throwing that much weight out there, so I probably won't need the 20 feet of mono that they recommended. Maintaining a 5 foot leader would certainly be cheaper heh.
