  1. The Pompano will soon start showing up again in South Florida, so at night I make 2 and 3 hook Pompano rigs while watching somethng on the television. For whatever reason I never really gave much thought into making them. I use 20lb fluorocarbon, with the standard 2 or 3 hooks, a swivel on top and snap on the bottom. The line is rated for 20lbs and I have thrown upto 6oz. of lead (if the surf is very rough and lighter weights or spiders wont hold). I have never had any problems with the line breaking except if I have overused that rig. I cast the hell out of those rigs as I spend long days on the beach if it's not too hot or if there are a bunch of us fishing and having a good time. My questions are: At what oz. weight do you all think 20lb fluorocarbon is really stressed while casting? (I know there would be alot of physics involved which is way over my simple mind to comprehend) What size/lb swivel would overstress the swivel? What size snap would be best for throwing upto 6oz. of lead Thanks in advance
  2. I'm sure you have already chosen your teams. Should you still have a need, I do quite a bit of surf/jetty/pier fishing. If I can help out then please let me know. Thanks
  3. Thanks to you all for the great advice. I am looking forward to just being there in the pre-fall and enjoying the area. Looks like I will bring my 8', 10' and 12' with me onto the plane. I'll load the reels with 30lb PowerPro. probably bring my Emblem's and Salina 65. They have great drags and can take a real pounding if need be. What type of rigs do you suggest I make prior to heading out to fish? I am sure fishing the beaches in South FL is very different from the rougher surf further north. Thanks again everyone for your advice.
  4. I am going to the Vineyard this September to meet my brother during the last week in September.. While there I plan on entering the Striper Tournament that goes on until mid-October. I have never fished the Northeast and really looking forward to it. I cant believe how affordable to rents are during their offf season. My questions: What length rod's do I bring withh me? 8ft, 10ft, 11ft, 12ft? What strength line/leader? Mono, fluoro, braid? Rigs? Plugs? Lead?, etc.... How far off shore will the fish be in general? What is the preferred bait? Any help and any additional information anyone can share would be greatly appreciated? Thanks, Fred
  5. I've owned this reel for just about a year now. It has turned into my favorite reel. With their incredible customer service Stingray is likely to remain on top of my list for new tackle. I use my Aqua 40 at least 2-3x/week in all situations. I use it on ly 10 ft. Emblem to cast out beyond the break, on mu 7 fdt. emblem for closer to the beach fishing. It has performed flawlessly except for a non-functioing bait runner. I brough it in last week for repair. I went in today to pick it up. I left the store with a brand new reel. No questions asked. When I was told they were giving me a new reel I was shocked. They told me that that was what the 2 year warranty was for. Let me tell you I have heavily fished on that little Aqua 40. It has seen plenty of use and abuse. No questions asked, just here is your new reel. I am still pretty amazed. I also want to tell everyone that for a bait runner this little reel will cast a mile. I am by no means what I consider to be anything but an average disance caster. That reel will cast 3 - 4 oz a good 150 yds plus. I would love to see how it would perform in the hands of someone that really know what they were doing. I am planning on buying one of the Team Alabama 13 ft' rods by the end of the month. I am very likey going to go with Stingray's Aqua 50 to pair it with. It's a good buy at a little over a $100. I have a good feling it will be a great match.
  6. Anyone here use one of these rods? I stopped by their tackle shop this morning to take a look. The rods are 12ft or 14 ft, medium heavy to heavy, all SiC guides, convertible to conventional or spinning reels, carbon fiber blanks. The price is only $109 and they look and feel good. Appear to be pretty stiff down low and the medium heavy feels like it can handle upto 6 oz with no problem. I am looking to buy a couple of new rods before the Pompano start coming back to the Jupiter, FL. This will also be my first foray into using conventional reels. I had them put on one of the Omoto 7000 CM reels on it. Together the set up felt good and balanced. The reel itself is pretty impressive for $109. I am going back next week with "Pompano Rich" who is one of the local commercial Pompano surf casting legends in the area. That man catches tons of fish on his custom rods and reels. He is going to take a look and tell me what he thinks about them.
  7. (*edited - please don't cross post here - post your question in the most appropriate forum and only in that forum. Thanks. TimS)
  8. I found these bearings from Boca Bearing. Which would be better for the beach, oiled or greased bearings? Thanks again.
  9. Are the bearings in an Abu Garcia 6500 compatible with those in a Ming Yang CL-60A? I asked the folks at Stingray Tackle and they could not give me an answer. Thanks
  10. We usually twiddle our thumbs next to a small cooler filled with beer. Between the guys fishing, telling tall tales and laughing it tends to be more of a social thing than real fising. I do agree with you that fishing for pompano alone does lack a certain degree of excitement (until you get a hit and end up fighting and losing your fish to a shark looking for an easy meal). Let me know when you are in South FL and we can take a two minute walk from my front door to the surf and catch some fish.
  11. Thanks everyone for your responses. I am lucky in that I do live in a prime fishing spot being on the North side of the Jupiter Inlet. The South side is usually packed tight with people fishing. Never more than 3 or 4 people on the North side. I was out today for about an hour, caught 5 mangrove snapper and went home to make dinner. The snook are also out in full force aroud here. When you see the numbers and size of the snook you wonder why they have not lifted the fishing ban on them. There was someone yesterday that was caught off thre beach that had to weight 30-35lbs. There has also been some killer jacks, tarpon and sharks not 15 feet from the shoreline. They are usually swimming in the trough when the tide is right. It's been great living here. When the pomapno are passing through my 10 and 13 foot rods come out and the fun really starts.
  12. Hello All, I am new to the forums and fishing in general. I was wondering if you all knew of anyone or a place in South FL where I might be able to get some long distance surf casting instruction. I live in Jupiter, FL and am there is a great beach to fish off of very close to where we live. Now, I need to learn to get to the fish. I've read some books and watched a ton of vidoes but want some one who actually can show me how to cast 100 plus yards. Thanks in advance...
  13. Hello All, I am new to the forums but have been reading your posts for a couple of months now. I am relatively new to the world of fishing having started about a year ago when we moved to FL. Needless to say, I am hooked on fishing from the beach. I am really interested in learning how to distance cast and was wondering if anyone knew of a place in South Florida where I might be able to get some "hands on" instruction. I have purchased some books and watched a bunch of videos which have helped. I need some real time critique and instruction to get me to the next level. I live in Jupiter, FL and am fortunate to be only a two minute walk to the beach. I want to make to make as much as I can of the time I get to fish. Pompano season would have been alot more successful if I could have been able to cast a bit further out than I am currently able to. Thanks again for all of the useful information you have provided to me in my relativel short fishing career. Fred
