  1. Thanks for all the suggestions. I remember reading somewhere about preheating the plugs, but I forgot to do that. Also, the ziploc bag is a great idea. How long do people generally soak bare wood plugs when using thinned etex?
  2. Sorry, I see where my post is misleading. I picked CPES to use instead of ETEX, not over it. So what I did was coat the blanks with CPES for a while, and then let them dry for a couple days. I'm not sure how well it penetrated, so I was wondering if doing a second go around with the CPES would work, or if I'm okay to just give a light sand with 220 and then prime.
  3. Has anyone had any luck sealing bare wood (AYC) with Smith's CPES prior to painting? I decided to go with the CPES over thinned ETEX. I just sealed a batch of plugs with it, but I'm not sure if I should do another coat of sealer before I paint. I poured the CPES back and forth over the plugs into plastic containers for about 40 minutes, but I'm not sure how much actually penetrated/absorbed. Any feedback would be appreciated.
  4. DEM had recreational brochures at the RISAA show. Tog open April 15, same as last year.
  5. Great work!! I'm in the process of stripping down a 704 to do something similar. How did you get the handle arm so shiny? Did you just polish it with mothers? or did you sand first? Looks fantastic.
  6. Bristol, Actually, it's the fluorescent paint that I was hoping to use. I'm looking to paint some plugs in a parrot color scheme, starting with a yellow base, and then painting the top with Rustoleum's fluorescent green. Anyone have a recommendation for a light green to use in a parrot scheme?
  7. I am using rattle cans to paint plugs, and was wondering if there is any issue of compatibility if I were to spray Rustoleum over Krylon. I am using the basic Gloss finish paints. Are they chemically compatible, or will they react/bubble on me?
  8. I am just starting out in plug building, and I have been reading a lot about various sealing methods before priming. I think I am going to seal with Etex, diluted 2:1 with denatured alcohol. What I am wondering is, what is a preferred method of applying the seal? Dipping? or brushing on? Does one method work better than the other?
  9. I think I might try to seal the side cover by taking a piece of thin silicone sheet stock, and then very carefully cutting out a custom gasket with an exacto knife. I would use the side plate as a template, and also include three bumpout areas for the screw bosses.
  10. what material is the one on the left? Brass? any special type? naval brass, or engraving brass? and is that laser etched?
  11. LR3, When you say you hardened both shafts, are you referring to the main gear shaft, and also the spool shaft? I am a little confused about the pinion gear anti-reverse bearing. The HF0812R has a knurled outer ring, so I'm assuming that that bearing is press fit into the reel body where the spool shaft bushing used to be. You mentioned how you enlarge the pinion gear to fit against the bearing. I am wondering how the pinion gear is able to rotate relative to the bearing, since I believe the outer portion of the bearing is fixed to the housing. The spool shaft does not rotate, so is it necessary to harden it? Unless I have it backwards, and you bored out where the bushing used to be, so the bearing (and pinion gear) rotate freely, relative to the fixed spool shaft. Sorry for all the questions, but I am excited about this modification, and want to make sure I get it right!!! Thanks
  12. LR3, I have a question about the bearings you put in for the main gear shaft. I see that you removed the bushing that was on the inside of the main body. In pic 1 above, I can barely see it, but is that the anti-reverse bearing that has been pushed down into the hole where the bushing used to be? and then it looks like you've placed the second bearing for stability in a counterbore above the anti-reverse bearing. Is that correct? Also, for the pinion gear, how does the pinion gear engage into your second antireverse bearing? Is it just a snug fit up against the face of the internal bearing race? or did you modify the bottom of the pinion gear somehow. I can't wait to try this on a 704.
  13. Phenomenal work. I would love to make this mod to one of my 704s. LR3, could you send me the part numbers or brands of the bearings you used? I have access to a machine shop, so I can remove the bushings and have precise bores made to fit them.
  14. I certainly will post pics. It's still a work in progress. If all goes well, I'll have it up and running by the time the stripers arrive.
