6500 sports-rocket build on a whim....

That is a nice looking real, what kind of oil are you using on the bearings or are you running them dry? The reel looks good like it is and it should cast a mile with those bearings. -
Longcaster did a pretty good job of explaining it. I have a daiwa saltist lever drag that I static magged a couple of years ago. Basically it doesnt have any knob on the side plate to adjust the mag, it just has 2 magnets inside sitting close to the spool. Its basically an offshore reel but I still magged it and have gotten some decent casts with minimal thumb play. Though Ill probably never use it for the surf, its nice to know I have a powerhouse reel that I could use in case I ever wanted to

Well each frame was about 130 I think minus the shipping. Center mag kits were around 20, and the bearings were a little pricey. The full ceramics were almost 80 I think. I know its a little high, but I didn't get everything at once. Seems like a lot of money to put into a reel that is already amazing, but I think its worth it. I took 2 reels that were already great and made them even better.

I have seen his videos and he does make it look easy. But I think thats due to years of practice. Ive only been using baitcasters and conventionals for about 4 or 5 years now. I started off with an abu garcia revo toro paired to a 7ft musky rod and for some reason I could cast the heck out of it. Using a regular casting technique I found I could get this whip effect when casting and I was outcasting my brother in law using similar reels with longer rods easily. When I tried that using a longer rod I found out I couldnt get as much leverage casting. I dont really know why, but I always found the pendulum technique easy. Yeah at first I did have a little trouble with timing and everything but once I got it down I was casting far with not having to use as much effort and when I really did put my all into it I was getting amazing results. And for my brother in law it was the opposite, he hasnt really gotten down the pendulum but he has amazing ground casts. But he tends to break his reels a little more than I do. He likes to cast and not have to use his thumb, me I like having my spool a little loose. I like to have a feel for the cast and I like to feather the cast, somehow I feel like I can cast further if I have my spool like that then to use more of the cast controls and not use my thumb. But again I guess thats personal preference. I know that if I didnt use my thumb my reels would blow up, but I like that. Its almost like driving a car thats manual.

Yeah I was used to using 7ft rods, when I made the jump to 10ft I didnt really notice much of a difference in feel. But some casting techniques are a little larder for me. Over head and pendulum casting came easy to me, its ground casting that I have trouble with. I guess Its hard for me to commit to the cast knowing the weight is coming off the ground and I feel like its gonna snag on something. So far pendulum is my favorite but I rarely use it when I fish. But there is a huge difference in distance versus effort when I use pendulum as apposed to regular over head casting.

Haha halloween reels! I had never though of them as that until now

My super tuned 6500s, left to right : 6500 cs mag with full ceramic bearings and a 6500 cs pro rocket with hybrid ceramics.

Yeah I know that you mean, I hooked into 2 monster jacks a couple of years back at the jetties. There was tons of baitfish in the water that day and I remember there was a lot of fishermen that day catching them as well. And on to the reels, the cs mag is still brand new. I havent used that one, but the pro rocket yes. Ive had that reel for about 3 years now and its my go to reel for the surf. I try to keep my stuff in top shape, i make sure to wash it and lube it right away when I get home as well as my rods. That rod I use is a daiwa saltiga surf rod, a 10 footer and it casts far. The tip is kind of light but its still a really strong rod and can handle some pretty large fish.

Where do you fish from, the piers or the beach? I havent been to port mansfield in about 3 years but ive been planning on going. Im thinking about doing some surf fishing at the island sometime this week. I heard a while back that they were catching some pretty big king mackerel at the tip of the jetties on lures. Itd be nice to hook up onto one of those monsters
