  1. And are used in fried clam strips. Also, the foot is eaten raw in some sashimi bars. Doesn't taste like much and it's pretty chewy. It's also used in chowders and fritters. I've never seen live surf clams (Spisula solidissima) for sale as bait in MA. By 'live', I'm assuming you mean in-shell.
  2. Didn't fish last night. Instead put pots in and ran out of room for rods/tackle. Saw birds working around the bell buoy and one or two boats working the beach.
  3. Was going to try Thursday night. Will let you know how I do.
  4. How many of the waders / yakkers wear a light? I always do.
  5. . . . your local legislative community. Reps and senators can put hard pressure on public regulatory agencies.
  6. Please be careful with this practice: you might not be hanging your clams in a very clean area. Also, this may be considered 'wet storage' and is illegal in some areas, especially if the area is 'prohibited' by the regulators.
  7. I've used some red hots with equal success. About a tablespoon for every 2-3 pounds or so. Always use clean salt water.
  8. Yup, M'head will be closed at least until sept. 1. Most likely longer if there's a big red tide. The only classified area to dig during that winter season is off Devereux and Goldthwait beaches. Good surf clamming though.
  9. In MA, you need a license, no matter what town. If the town is allowing that, they and you can get in trouble.
  10. You're not going to find quahogs in any numbers on the North Shore. You're best bets for rec shellfishing for softshell (steamers) are Ipswich, Essex, and Gloucester, in that order. It will be expensive for a non-resident license. Certain flats within Plum Island Sound are federal Refuge property and you'll need a license from them too (I believe that its free). Pay attention to rainfall closures. Sometimes all it takes is 1/4" of rain in a day to close flats down for 3 or more days. If and once you decide on a town, give the shellfish constable a call, they're all nice guys and they will help you out. As far as technique, that'll come with time and practice. Try and find a friendly clammer to show you. It's not that hard. Any other questions, send me a PM. I'm sort of in the business.
  11. Fished in the Merrimack yesterday and nothing. Plenty of sand eels though.
  12. Yup, seems odd. But this has been an odd spring. 58? where?
  13. Unless you were in the Hudson or Chesapeake, probably not.
  14. I heard that the regulations in MA may 'relax' after the end of 2011.
  15. It's actually state law to wear pfd's in canoes and kayaks between I think 9/15 and 5/15. That being said I've fished out of a canoe just fine in Buzzards Bay when the water temps allow for it. Still, sad.
