  1. Where ever sand and sea meet, Outerbanks or the Louisiana gulf coast are about equal distant to me
  2. Jim DE, This is what I was looking for; a Flyrodders Q&A. I'm still trying to decided if I want to enter the saltwater arena after spending the last 2 years aquiring spinning tackle for strippers. If get my feet wet it will probably be as an adjunct to spinfishing the surf on suitable weather days; at least to start off. Here's my equipment question. Does anyone have experience with Thomas and Thomas rods or R.L. Winston; also Lamson or Ross Reels. 9'/9'6" length and 9/10 wt. I have a small amount of sweetwater experience so this won't be my first rod. Paul

  4. What about a Hydrographic or Bathymetric charts? From the National Imagery& mapping Agency(DMA) http://164.214.2.59/ Distributed by National geophysical data center at www.ngdc.noaa.gov [This message has been edited by 50 (edited 01-21-2001).]
  5. I'll vote for the 23rd.
  6. 'Intelligent Fisherman' Isn't that an oxymoron? Oh yah he's the one that goes to the store and gets just the type and exact limit of the fish he is looking for.
  7. Right Dan!!! We should see the movie as just entertainment, but remeber 5000 Gloucester Fishermen have been lost at sea doing their job. And even more so the Coasties and Air- Sea rescue who go out in this kind of weather Like Police and Firemen who have to go toward the trouble while everyone else has the luxury of retreating, or staying out of harms way.So to the Rick Smith's of this world we owe a lotand should see the movie as a tribute to his sacrifice. Now where did I leave that soapbox ??? Paul [This message has been edited by 50 (edited 07-01-2000).] [This message has been edited by 50 (edited 07-01-2000).]

  9. Good!! Some under and some a little over According to the people at NOAA that are in wave study the Theoretical Max height of an open ocean wave(caused by wind only) is 197ft!!! (surf's up dude). This is based on the average depth of the pre-continental shelf open ocean and the molecular cohesiveness of water(another wards how much water can be stacked upon itself before it falls in upon itself of its own weight). ek. All this is to say that Commercial fishing can suck . Paul [This message has been edited by 50 (edited 06-29-2000).]
  10. George WHO? Even John Wayne died In 3 of his movies!! As for special effects That one scene the promo shows of the Andrea Gail going up the wave face is probably very close to realistic (not the wave surfing so much as the wave size). It was reported (I think it was in the book also) that the NOAA weather bouy was Lost to a single wave estimated well over 100ft.(had recorded and survived previous 97ft. waves and 120knot winds) during that 1991 storm. Another trivia question. What is the highest theoretical open ocean wave that could have been generated by this (or any storm)? I'll post it tommorrow
  11. Hey C&R, Why don't you do Hunting and Fishing conservation like I do. When I hunt I make so much noise I never get a shot. When I fish I spend all my time rigging the line. What time I do have a line in it is usually in the wrong place with the wrong lure so I don't catch anything except seaweed One time I caught a short, but that was a suicide. I wasn't even looking at my pole in the sand spike; the line was all the way down the beach so I knew something was on As for a 50# bass if I ever did hook into one I would probably release it immediately, because I know that this would be the End of the World ek Just my 2.57cents And the rest of yuse guys stop hanging around here waiting to see if it reaches 200 You should be out doing your bit for conservation by catching and releasing your 50's SO YOU CAN GET IT OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM !!!, and go to work on the 60's for Keepers PaulY
  12. Thanks Mark and Chris, I couldn't find which Board Gowge put those threads on Mark, because he is on several places. I have contacted Eric Petersen from Custsurftackle@aol.com and he is familiar with the New concept and has taken on the job of Doing up the rod. So we will see when I get out to the Hook how it works out and report back TNX Paul
  13. TimS,Mark,Anyone, Well I still haven't found someone(close to Northern N.J.) too wrap my Breakaway 1209 rod yet, but the interim I've picked up the reel seat and thread and have been looking into selecting guides. I wish to use my Diawa z5500a reel(spinning) mostly and a braided line. Question: Do I need to use SIC guides with braided line or standard Hardaloy will work? Also I was looking into Fuji New concept Guides system, but only example from their web page is with a 7' spinning rod(I guess they Don't surffish over there). Question: Does anyone have experience with using the 'New concept guides' on a 10' or longer rod and what spacing and guide sizes were used? I know there was a short thread on March 31st where Mark from Arlington,Va.used them only his was a 8' rod I believe and no one had used it on any thing larger. Mark if you see this thread and have since done up anything larger in New Concept theory jump in with your experience So if anyone can help with some answers feel free or discuss your latest thought on large gathering guide verses smaller gathering guide Mounted further up. PaulY
