  1. Could you explain what this means? Pardon my ignorance. TIA -Chris
  2. Joe Mahler FFF instructor, President of the Sanibel Fly Fishers. (239) 898-0263 Greatly improved my cast in an hour this May. If only the snook had been hungrier.
  3. I went out with Joe Blados last weekend and he had an Axiom 8wt with a 10wt Airflo intermediate line. He prefers "overlining" for sight fishing. I cast it for a while and then put the same reel/line on my Xi2 9wt. They felt very similar to me. The Xi2 was slower and more forgiving, but felt a little "sloppy" after the Axiom. The Axiom was stiff but still had feel to it. I have a TiCR 4wt that feels like a broomstick even with a 5wt GPX which is really a 5.5wt line. I really liked both rods. If I did not already have the Xi2 I would seriously consider getting two Axioms for what I payed for the Sage. Wonder if the 6wt could throw an 8wt line?
  4. Just read in the guidelines that I have not made enough posts yet to PM anyone. Fair enough.
  5. Formula1, I will be on vacationing on Sanibel Island May 22 - June 4. Would love any suggestions on fishing the area. I will PM you for guide suggestions. I hope that is OK.
  6. I will be on Long Island. North Fork but might try to go to Montauk tomorrow. Trying to figure out parking issues for M. right now.

Do you fish the preserve by boat? I drove through the preserve and it did not seem that great for fly casting from the banks.
  8. Thanks for the advice Crazystars. I would take you up on it but I am too busy reading the Snide Response forum.
  9. Thanks for the replies everyone. I am going to Try and go out with Becker and Blados eventually. Not sure if I can do it this year though. I spent too much money on equipment this year for me to even think about running something like that past my wife. Next year I will make that a priority. As far as parking I have never gotten a parking ticket past labor day. I got one on labor day a few years ago when I stupidly pushed my luck. Just found out this year that I can get beach stickers through my In-Laws. Got one for the wife's car but not for the fishing mobile yet. BTW it is a green CRV with a TGF sticker on the back. Was out this weekend - couldn't catch a cold. I really do not have any luck out there too much unless I see fish first. I don't know if I should be staying put in one area or driving to different spots. It seems like there are short windows where the fish turn on and I keep missing them. BTW -I was at Rocky point yesterday and did not get a ticket. Hope that houseowner doesn't read this board. Had a good time with the switch rod though. Chris -Chris Was out this
  10. Hello, I posted a few weeks ago but I never introduced myself. My names Chris. I live in Westchester. Work in NYC. Been fly fishing for about 8 years freshwater and a few years in the salt. I fish mainly on the North Fork of Long Island cause the In-Laws live out there. Sometimes in CT. Occasionally Duxbury MA. I became obsessed with fishing the salt this spring mostly cause I took a trip to Sanibel Island with limited catching success but awesome time sight-casting to huge snook right off the beach. Then a few weeks later I was on the North Fork and caught a bunch of stripers sight-casting right off the beach. Then I got skunked and skunked and skunked. Nothing to speak of for the last two months. Any suggestions about fishing the North Fork would be great. Ideally I would love to hook up with some others who also fish the North Fork and nearby areas. If anyone would like to fish or chat please get in touch. BTW. I actually ended up getting a Beulah 11ft 9/10wt surf rod, the subject of my first post, with a Rio Outbound. Haven't used it much, but I will be using it this weekend on the NF. Hoping to hit the South Shore soon too. -Chris
  11. A few friends and I have been experimenting with "euro-nymphing" (aka czech) techniques in similar local NY waters. 15-20" mono leaders with heavy tungsten nymphs. In the spring there were many, many days of rains and high waters. I was always able to use this technique to pull some fish out of the rivers no matter how high. One friend thinks it is easier than normal flows because the fish are forced to bunch up in the remaining slow areas. I don't find this kind of casting very enjoyable though. But another issue is when the water is spilling over the tops of the dam in the summer it warms up the rivers and puts the fish down or is too warm to fish without killing them.
  12. Chromedome, Which line are you using and is it the 9/10 wt rod? That's what I was thinking of getting so that I could cast large flies 100ft while I am learning how to cast large flies 100ft.
  13. Thanks for your replies. I guess #3 wins. Suck it up = Learn to cast better = Take some lessons. I have a bad habit of trying to do everything on my own. For what it's worth I forgot to mention that I have a 9ft 9wt St Croix SCIV that I have a much better time casting. I can cast weighted flies a lot easier overlined with a 10wt intermediate. But not so much big wind resistant flies. I am still interested in a switch rod. Would it be a bad idea to be learning to cast on a 9ft and a switch at the same time? I would not be casting the switch one handed so I would be working on two different techniques. thanks
  14. First post. Hello everyone. Great site, wish I had started reading it a few years ago. I need to figure out a solution for casting bigger/heavier flies. I have a Scott X2s 10 wt. I have never been very happy with this rod but I am starting to like casting light flies on it. However with weighted flies my casting starts to fall apart. I just feel like the rod and/or my casting ability does not have the muscle needed. To address this I am considering: 1. A switch rod. I will probably get one eventually but I am not sure how versatile they - will I still need a beefy 9ft 10wt? 2. Xi2 - I almost bought this instead of the Scott and kind of wish I had. I am sure it is faster than i can handle know but I think I would be able to master it eventually. 3. Suck it up and stick with the X2s. Maybe try over-lining it. Any thoughts would be really helpful. -Chris
