  1. Hey Christian, If you guys get something going and want another, I'm game, just lemme know. Kurt
  2. JonS, I read the discussion you were having at another board about the tube n worm lures. I was wondering if you weight these things, or are they heavy enough. Maybe depends on temp. and water clarity, but just curious. Also, Sandworms for bait? I have never used them as bait. My saltfishing experience is limited to squid, minnows, cut bait, and artificials. Can you buy them at baitshops? Sorry if these sound like idiotic questions. BTW I just gave you guys a great recommendation at yakfishing.com (west coast site) after dealing with you, and getting great info from you guys, and your sense of integrity and dedication to customer service. Seems another guy there just bought a yak from JonS and is spreading the word there. Sorry for the long winded message. Kurt [This message has been edited by JonS (edited 08-24-2002).]
  3. Just a week or so ago I fished a private lake in upstate NY. The fishing sucked, but I had a great morning paddling in the morning mist, when I came upon an adult female Loon with her chick (sub-adult plumage). I've never seen loons in the wild before, being from south central PA. It was a nice morning, despite not catching much. I didn't talk to the Loons though.
  4. CHIEF, Just walk into a shop that sells Cobra kayaks and take the plug out of the floor model and walk out. Just kidding, don't be a sleaze.
  5. JPL "bee's knees"? too funny. Anyway, thanks for the info guys. Guess I'll order a couple wellnuts, and maybe purchase a couple of "whim" items too. Maybe a drift sock to make the windier days more do-able. Any idea what size sock for a Cobra Explorer with a 165ish pound rider, or does drift sock size depend on wind speed more that weight/boat size? JonS, Christian tells me that you are the "go to guy" to get all my kayaking gear needs.
  6. thanks flyrodder, what size hole do I need to drill to get the rubber thingie on the "wellnut" through the hull? Do they come with the right size bolt/screw? Kurt
  7. I bought a Scotty rod holder, which comes with bolts and locknuts (and washers). How can I attach the rodholder without access to the interior of the hull? Possible relocation of the rodholder base seems to make the use of marine rivets a bad idea. Would stainless wood screws or stainless self-tapping sheet metal screws have enough long term holding power for the thin plastic hull of the Cobra Explorer? JonS, Christian told me you might have some type of marine hardware that expands inside, but would be removable if necessary. Kurt
  8. I do not have a roof rack. I use pool noodles (with holes through them) and I bungee (hooks on either end of the bungee through the noodles, and I hook the hooks together under the keel) them to the yak. I use one nylon tiedown strap with a locking buckle through the car, and bow and stern lines. I have gone 70 mph+ with no problems.
  9. Christian, I'll give you a ring once my hand heals, unfortunately the upcoming weekend is pretty much a bust, since I work saturday and sunday. Kurt
  10. Hi, I sliced my right palm on a tuna can lid on Sat., It's healing nicely. I want to fish tommorrow, but I'm afraid I'll tear it open paddling. Any suggestions? Or should I just go watch a movie and wait until it's fully healed? This sucks. Kurt
  11. Hi, I'm a newbie at this, and if it's apparent to me, it should be apparent to anyone with more experience. I have an explorer and it's right for me, but I'm 5'7", and I can almost max out the leg room. Get the Nav. Kurt
  12. Climbing into a sailboat from a yak is difficult, eh? Makes you appreciate the ability of NAVY SEALS boarding an oil rig in the North Atlantic at night in the rain from a zodiac. I woulda fell, hit my head on the gunwales of the sailboat, and drowned while unconscious bobbing around in the PFD.
  13. Hi guys, That was one tough gate. Believe me, we thought about tearing the gate down, but we would have destroyed our cars doing it. We even checked out the fence. I had fun, and learned more about paddling and the yak. We might have been a little late getting out, but I believe that since we were already on our way out, and the people were just there, they could have waited 15 minutes, and lock up after. Happy hour will still be there when they leave. We spent happy hour trapped in the park waiting for the key. Thanks to Christian for the invite. (and his cell phone, which got us out of there)
  14. I was wondering what kinds of bait buckets are suitable for yaks. Years ago, my grandfather and I used a plastic bait bucket with a handle on top, and it had a spring-hinged reach-in lid, and it had holes near the top, so when tossed in the drink, it kept the water fresh to keep the minnows alive, but when upright, it kept in the water that was in it. It was fairly large, but worked well. I was wondering if there was something like that, but smaller for yaks. Maybe hold 10-20 minnows. I would have no prob with transporting minnows for short distances in a bag or something, then transferring the minnows to a drag-behind type of bucket with holes that kept the water fresh. I'm too new to consider aerators/pumps etc. to install in the boat for an enclosed onboard bait bucket. Maybe later.
