  1. Take an online boater safety class. I got a lot of good info from doing that. It's free to take, but if you want to get a certificate you have to pay. That's in PA anyway. Since you are going to be fishing coastal areas, it may be a good idea to do this since, it teaches you about the different markers and bouy's, light signals, hazards, and other boating rules and courtesy....
  2. Yep... read that in my Boater Safety class ... I think they even recommended 7 feet of line per foot.... but I've read a bunch of other places that said the same rule you did... Until I get used to my yak though, I'm only going to anchor if I can touch bottom with my paddle, so I'm thinking this anchor should be ok for that. Just not sure about the current though.... I'm trying to take baby steps, and just get used to the kayak.... plus stay safe...
  3. This is the anchor I have.... not sure if this would work in a strong current, but it worked fine in the lake I was in yesterday... I may need more line (Only has 25 ft, but in shallow water, it seems to work ok):
  4. That is exactly what I was doing yesterday... using a number 6 hook, with a single split shot, and nightcrawler. I set my little anchor, and just went to town. Caught a bunch of crappies, and sun fish. The sunfish were pretty big though so it was fun. I was trying a bunch of soft plastics and spinners, but all the fish were caught using nightcrawlers.... I went late afternoon and the wind was pushing me around a little bit, but thankfully I had the little anchor.
  5. And here I thought I was the only Redneck in Ardmore! Let me know if you ever want to go fishing sometime. You have a kayak?
  6. I think this is her long lost brother Finnegan... he's eaten the baby's pacifier (which cost $1000 to get out of him), our marriage license, a few bibs, about 1/2 lb of ham right out of the grocery bag as we were carrying it in the door, and most recently a baby sock my daughter kicked off her foot while in her swing that he caught mid air and swallowed whole instantly: (someone else has this same table and pic! I thought that was funny!) From puppy to linebacker: Finn fishing on a grouse hunt (we did eventually find some grouse after "fishing" but he is a better hunter than I am so no pics of that):
  7. Great posts man! Love seeing stuff like that!
  8. Anyone ever fish here? What did you use? What did you catch? I'm going to tool around in my yak for the first time on Sunday, and once I get my "feet wet" in it, I'll be doing a little fishing to see what I can catch.... any help would be appreciated!
  9. Supposed to match color of water to color of lure used right? Dark waters, dark colored lures(Black/Blue); Clear water, lighter colors(white/silver); Muddy water, (yellows or gold). That is what I try to do anyway....
  10. I was thinking it would slow down your drift a bit... I've seen and heard of boats using them... it creates more drag, and slows down your drift.
  11. Any ideas for storage with a sit inside.... I guess I can just put my tackle box down in the hull, but I was wondering if anyone did anything more secure for a sit inside...
  12. What about a drift sock.... how well do they work with a kayak?
  13. Especially here in PA... they are restocking a ton of trout streams around here, and with that, return the masses. I've been trout fishing a couple times, so far, but I only go on the rainy and cold days. You tend to see less people then... I can't wait to get out on the Kayak though.... should be fun!
  14. Will those Scotty Powerlock Holders hold onto the rod if you flip? I was thinking about adding three of those to my yak, instead of the two flush mounts in the back. Plus that way, I'd just have to drill in some screw holes instead of cutting two big holes in the yak to fit the recessed holders.... I have to fish in it first to figure out what I want to do, but was curious how tightly those holders lock up your rod.
