  1. I just ordered some new Carbontex washers for my old ABUs. I'm wondering: What grease can I find locally to use on the drag? I have encountered a corrosion problem on the metal parts when I have left them dry. Can I lightly grease the older regular smoothies to avoid corrossion?
  2. Someone on this forum gave me one a while back, which I have only used with mono up to this point. What braid would you use on an older spinning reel like this?
  3. I would look at some of the fast action steelhead blanks out there. I think both Lami and Rainshadow make some things that would fit the bill.
  4. How do these compare in the same weight? I have only used pryamids but read that coin sinkers don't toss in the surf. How does holding power compare if you are using something like 2oz?
  5. I posted this on the Distance Casting forum, but thought more might see it hear. What differences do you see in casting as the reels get narrower/wider? If the concern is pure distance, which will throw farthest? I have wondered if the lower mass of the spool and line on the narrower reel would translate into greater distance by tuning the reel's brakes/oil to run faster. I could see where the lower capacity reel with create greater resistance as the spool begins to empty; but does that hurt you any given that the weight is by then slowing down? If bearings and everything else is equal, how does spool width effect casting distance?

  7. It's one of the new C4s with the carbon drag. Can you get more than 5~6# before it stops being smooth?
  8. How do you keep what you catch when wading the flats? Water will be around 80 degrees; fishing for flounder and pompano. BTW, how do you keep from attracting something that will eat YOU?
  9. Shock leader should wrap around the spool 5x and still give you the drop you want from the tip when casting. I use 14# Sufix Tritanium and love it. Plenty of strength for the sandy beaches I fish (in SC) and casts great. I also use ABU 6500 series reels on mine.
  10. I agree with hitting a local tackle shop the first day for advice and a few rigs. If you just want to catch some fish then concentrate right beyond the breakers with shrimp and bloodworms; probably 2oz will be all the weight you need. If you're going to North Myrtle Beach or Cherry Grove then visit Bouleneu's (I'm sure I've mispelled it, but it's a hardware store with a French-sounding name) which is right off the road up the beach. I don't know any good places in Myrtle Beach proper.
  11. On the older reels, those w/o nitride line rolers and such, can I use braid or will it groove the line roller?
  12. Someone gave me an old Penn spinning reel, one of the silver ones (104 I think). I want to spool it with mono for my daughter, 12 to 15 lb, for fishing shallow sandy beaches. Is Suffix Tritanium about the best?
  13. Under $100, or at least able to find it on special for around that. I have Lami stuff and love it, but the Arra stuff would be out of the zone for them.
  14. I posted this on the main forum but will here as well. What blank would you use for a kid's surf rod, taking into consideration the following? About 10 years old, 4'6, 70lbs with good fitness and coordination. Need to throw 3oz max and be able for them to load with 2 oz no problem. Set up spinning using Penn reel.
  15. I want to build a surf stick for the kids - they are about 4'6", 70 lbs with good fitness and coordination: Spinning, using Penn 104 (or is it 140?) Throwing 3 oz max but they need to be able to load it okay with 2. What do ya'll suggest?
