  1. I bought an alvey (600bcxl) a couple months ago and I've learned to love it -- you do have to be aware of line twist, but with some swivels and some common sense I've never had a problem. In fact, yesterday I hit the beach and did some perch grubbing just like I would with a spinning rod, to see just how bad of an idea that would be. Had no problems and it was a blast. My rod's got a bit of flex to it and it was pretty damn fun. I also don't think it's that heavy -- I fish with it all day and don't get tired. I bought it to try something new and it's definitely been worth it thus far. Any SF area alvey owners around? As I'm new to the area I'd definitely like to get out in the surf with you guys and pick your brains.
  2. i'll get my PM on -- awesome guys, hope to make it out.
  3. rad guys, thanks -- and i just may make out to the fling!
  4. hey guys -- first real post here. im new to the SF bay, grew up fly fishing in wyoming, so i don't know diddly about fishing the surf, but i've been out every weekend and reading like a madman trying to pick up the basics (AND my girlfriend has somehow gotten the fishing bug after spending the first 24 years of her life without ever baiting a hook in santa monica) anyway, i just have some basic q's i was hoping you gentlemen could help me out with: for something like shrimp, are you tossing them on a carolina rig an then just letting them rollin the surf? slow retrieve? do any of you guys fish pileworms in the surf? again, how do you fish them? i've read a bunch of pier fishing sites that say jigging around the pier piles is good -- what sort of rig would you guys recommend for that? if the g/f lands a few surf perch i promise to post pics as a reward for the valuable info. thanks fellas!

    Alvey Q

Hi guys -- I'm thinking about picking up an Alvey (probably the 600bcxl) and I'm in San Francisco. Going to use it for surf casting and anything else I can think of/get away with. I was wondering if there's anywhere that actually SELLS these other than Alvey and Cabelas -- somewhere I could go, get my hands on them, maybe ask a guy a few questions, etc. If not, I'll be picking one up online and hitting you all up for your infinite wisdom.
