  1. I had similar problem with 17' CC w/70 hp motor. Took it to marine mech. and he looked at setup and told me the motor should be mounted so the cavitation plate is level with bottom of boat. I had to lower the motor, and it worked out for me.
  2. October, NOVEMBER, and December use to be the best/greatest time to fish the Jersey Shore! I always fished from the Hook south to Asbury Park. I never had to go any further. Stripers blitzed the beaches pushing bait onto the sand. Big schools of mullet and bunker would move along the shore line attracting large schools of bass. There would be so many sea gulls it was hard not to get tangled up with the birds when casting out. But it was all fun. Now all I read about is a short caught here and there. Sad, really sad. I wish all you surf fishermen the very best. Don't give up, you never know when the strippers will return.
  3. Charlie did have Alvey reels, he introduced them to me and allowed me to try them out. His rods were like 12' to 14' long. He had motorized beach carts. He retired from the Navy, and was an Admirals chef when he served. Great guy! 1972 to 1999 I fished the hook south to Holgate. Then from 1999 to 2003 then again 2008 to 2015 I fished from North Beach south to Asbury Park. Always started out fishing the hook and usually fished Monmouth beaches. I caught so many fish 1999 to 2003, it was the best ever. Blitzes everywhere, bass, blues, albies, spanish macks, wow! it was fantastic. I remember fishing with Vinny, Doug, Sal & son, John & daughter, Mike, Indian Charlie and many others. Oh how I miss those days and the friendships established. We had our own little fishing community. First names, and sometime just recognizing one another was all that was needed. Great memories! Beach replenishment and Hurricane Sandy change everything. Just not the same. I haven't fishes since Hurricane Sandy.
  4. Hello all, I use to live in NJ and was a regular, fishing Sandy Hook south to Asbury. Now I live in Tenn. I really miss the Jersey Shore! Well, I was wondering if anyone fishing the Hook knows or knew Indian Charlie? I use to give him the fish I caught. He is always grateful for anything someone gives him. I hope to make a trip back to NJ one day and fish my a- - off. Good luck to all of you very fortunate fishermen.
  5. Out front MOCO, least expected place to go, using 5" 1.5 oz custom plugs and swimmers, blues, spanish, 1 striper. No one around had it all to myself. Wow what a day.
  6. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll look into the Stella 5000. I have a couple of 9' rods I could use. I thought I would get an 8' rod to add you my arsenal. I'll let you know on what I decide.
  7. I am not asking if the gear is good! I know it is some of the best gear made. I am a surf fisherman my self. I have 2 Van Staal 150's and 1 Van Staal 200 on St Croix Leagend rods 9 and 10 foot that I have fished with since 2000 and have been very successful catching fish with them. I was thinking of purchasing a different outfit and considered Zee Baas as well as Shimano Stella reels. I was curious if anyone had the setup mention in my post and what their opinion was of it for working the surf. What I asked was " Does anyone have or use this setup?" I see now there is no need for a reply, I'll move forward with the purchase and let you know what I think of it.
  8. Hello fellow members. I am thinking about a new setup and would like your opinions. I am looking into purchasing a Shimano Stella SWB 6000 along with a St. Croix LGSS80MMF rod. Does anyone have or use this setup? I would use 20lb Suffix braid on the reel. I think it will cast really well and be able to get good distance with it. I like to through 1 1/2 - 2 oz lures, plugs, metals, buck tails. I look forward to your comments, thanks.
  9. White pencil popper, 30 lb PP braid, with a clip not a duolock or snap swivel
  10. If there is a gov. shutdown they say they won't send out social security checks, and the military won't get paid. Does that also mean no welfare checks, no other social services, no one in gov. will receive pay checks, those who served in gov. will not get there monthly check for life, foreign govs. will not get the millions of dollars promised to them for being our friends, no more foreign aid, no more research programs like studying the migration habbits of the hump back whale , no more space exploration, of course no non essential services, etc. Why do thay always attack social security an military pay first? I worked my whole life paying into social security, I went along with the gov. and their promise that I would have a retirement fund and benefits when I retired. I wasn't really given a choice in the matter. Now I'm retired and constantly threatened with we may not be sending out SS checks. Unfortunately, I do depend on receiving those checks. It's how I pay my bills. I wish I had been wiser and could have invested on my own, but I'm just a hard working man trying to support my family, without being on any welfare program or accepting a free handout. Stupid me! My son is in the military and twice his pay has been cut short. He was not able to pay his bills, so I helped him out. He's served two tours in Iraq, he does his job, he doesn't complain, he goes above and beyond to prove his worth to the military. And yet, this is how they treat our military. Just don't pay them! If anyone is not paid it should be all those elected and or appointed gov. officials, present and past, for failure to do their jobs. Oh, and one more thing, if Obamacare is good enough for me, it shoud be good enough for everyone in the country, no exceptions. Thanks for listening
  11. I own both reels, and as already mentioned it really boils down to how it feels to you. I also use the VS 150 on a 9' legend and the VS 200 on a 10' legend. When I am fighting bigger fish, I feel, I am in more control with the VS 200 and 10' rod , and can fight/handle/control the fish better than with the VS 150 and 9' rod. I fished with the VS 150 on a 10' rod before I purchased the VS 200. I fish 90% of the time with the VS 150. But when I'm into big fish, out comes the VS 200.
  12. Well, I checked out the ZB 22, and I decided to pass on the purchase of this reel. I did not feel there was enough difference/improvement over the VS 150 to justify the $$$$$. In fact, after giving it much consideration, the fact is the VS reels have served me well. I do the self service at home, and have not had a major failure. I'll stay with what I have and if I need to replace one of the VS reels, I will probably purchase another VS. Thank to everyone for their input.
  13. Is there a shortage of 1 1/2oz Andrus smilin bill buck tails. I've had them on order since 4/20/13. Does anyone know where I can get them?
  14. I'll be looking at the ZB on wednesday. I think I'll be able to make an informative decision to purchase or not. I've heard alot of positive things about the ZB.
  15. Well, I'm not interested in purchasing another reel the size of the VS 150, with less line capacity to boot. Only reason I am remotely interested was because it was said to be slightly larger than the VS150 and smaller than the VS 200. That's exactly what I'm looking for. I don't need, or want anything larger than the VS 200. I'm not going to spend that kind of money and end up with something I've already got two of ( I own 2 VS 150's). I guess I've been missinformed about the size difference of the ZB22 compared to the VS150.
