  1. @coldclam I built the Evolution 116 (1-6) w/ 6" cut off the butt NGC: 30-25-20-12-10-10-10. The 30 KW is at exactly 36" from extended spool lip using a VSX250. The rod casts flawlessly with no line slap. I'm sure 32" will work as well, just more of a rapid choke layout.
  2. I had one from the time of release by VS and used it regularly for years. Great drag, but the line lay was off and I had to shim the rotor. I caught hundreds of bass and sizable brown sharks with it. Overall a great tough reel, but heavy. I sold mine two years ago to put money toward a VSX. The original had a stainless handle, but VS offered an aluminum handle separately, which yours has.
  3. The torzite layout is light and I just put together a stick with tortes all the way out. What's your torzite layout: 20-16-12-7s or 16-12-10-7s?
  4. @Mike Oliver how does the 6 weight igniter compare to its Method predecessor? I have the 6 weight method and it’s become my favorite light weight streamer stick and the 11 weight Method is one of my most used striper sticks. Swing weight is lighter than many of the 9s I’ve fished. Sage blanks are becoming much harder to find and very pricey. I’ve been building out and fishing several of the NFC FAF LMX #9s with torzites and finding that they perform as well or better than some of my Sage sticks (Method, Salt). Very caster friendly and load well close in or at distance. I recently let one of the LMXs go because the friend who casted it claimed it was the best rod they’ve used and offered anything I wanted for it. I’ve also been hearing a lot about these CTS FSA blanks on here and I’m intrigued and would like to hear more.
  5. I second Compleat Angler in Darien, although it can be tough to make the trip for us guys east of New Haven to make the trip. Back in the day, North Cove Outfitters was an excellent fly shop and Rivers End was great for odds and ends. Both were in Old Saybrook and both are no more. Black Hall Outfitters carries some tying stuff, but not much in the way of saltwater flies. Hopefully they will begin carrying my fly stuff in the future
  6. I didn’t weigh it before wrapping unfortunately
  7. I went 20-16-12-8s to tip. Strippers Ti double foot into size 8 Ti frame single foot fly guides. I’ve done a few NFCs now and I’ll never build another saltwater fly rod without ceramics out to the tip
  8. I built the NFC #10. It’s pretty fast for glass and heavy, but great for throwing heavy sinking lines and will take a beating in the boat
  9. I have the spinning version of that rod and use it from the boat. It’s great for throwing big plugs and livelining. Will easily handle anything 1.5 to 4 oz comfortably. The conventional version would be very versatile when paired with a 300 size lexa or tranx.
  10. I buy all of my Nidacore from LBI Fiberglass in Groton, CT. Good material for decks, combing, consoles, and doghouses. It's a total pain to do finished edges or core it for any screw holding applications. Some use the custom thicknesses of 1.5"+ for bulkheads and stringers when glassed heavily; relying on the strength of the glass alone to provide strength. Nida is generally not recommended for hull bottoms. You'd be much better off using a thin divinicell foam for your intended application.
  11. Do you notice any difference in casting? My thought would be that huge stripping guide would allow the line to air out and lose more line speed than the smaller guides of previous generations. Might be ok as long as you’re using heavier mainline (50-65#) and a reel with large spool face.
  12. I run 20# on inshore rods fishing plastics and metals up high. It’s perfect for blitz fishing and targeting schoolies and weakfish. Go 30-50 for big plastics or live baits for abrasion resistance. 20# won’t handle a big fish that wants to head directly into rocky structure
  13. Just got an 11’ moderate from Rodgeeks. It’s the SCII carbon, not the SCIV carbon of the legend. I’ll be interested to see the difference
  14. Anyone here own the current model Legend 3/4-4oz with Fuji K Guides (GSS106MM2)? How does it perform and what reel do you currently pair it with? I currently own the 9’ Moderate and think it’s a great rod with excellent feel (with the exception of the guide layout). From a rodbuilder’s perspective, the layout of the guide train on the 10’6” is atrocious (nobody uses a 50 mm K-guide on surf rods anymore). It seems that St. Croix took a step backward when they ditched the RV guides for the current layout which adds to much height for most reels and too much weight. I’d like to hear what current owners have to say before I buy the rod and switch the existing stripper out with a more appropriate 30 mm stripper.
