  1. I find that Bob Clouser's original instructions are the best method for attaching these. I recommend his book, or you can find a fairly recent video of him demonstrating the tie on Youtube.
  2. I ordered several gross of eyes from Canadian Llama. I heartily recommend doing business with them.
  3. Hi CGG, WOW - thanks so much for sharing via this amazing SBS. The pictures are terrific - thanks especially for the close-ups of the laser dub bunches. That you left the Liquid Fusion bottle in the foreground in the one where they are all laid out is particularly helpful as it give us a sense of scale. I also like that you showed how a small blemish is easily fixed. As I read through this, I can see my problem is not as much in the dub proportions as in the application of the glue. I have been applying it too thinly. I see what you meant about Casey Smartt's Deadhead SBS having the same technique. Incidentally, it was his SBS and pattern that got me looking for other patterns with a similar design and led me to the Hoo. I like both, but Jonny's Hoo is less complicated (IMO) and offers more possibilities for blending realistic shades, as in your peanut recipe. I agree with you- the man is a genius! I have been tied up all weekend with household chores, but I should get back to vise tomorrow to try this out. I'll post some pictures if the results are what I expect. This is such a great forum because so many gifted tiers are willing to share their experience. This SBS will definitely help a lot of people here. Thanks again!
  4. Thanks, CGG. Those are some gorgeous hoos!
  5. I haven't tied much in about 5 years, and before that it was sporadic. These days I have a bit more time, so I'm tying for all five of the reasons Captain listed, though "reason to drink" is more "occasion to drink." I sometimes have a highball near the vise. I have more Hoos to do so that I can get the technique down, then I plan to tie a bunch of bucktail deceivers - for me, nothing like bucktail to help you focus on the basics. One I'm back in the swing, I might tackle a Beast or two, and get to cranking out some kinky muddlers and hoos. My inventory is extremely low, so sticking with some staple patterns seems the way to go.
  6. Thanks, Local & Philly - those pointers are helpful. I think combing the stuff a bit before and after tying in at each step would help, so I'll try that. And thank you, Sidelock, for sharing your work. All of you are very encouraging!
  7. I'm getting back into tying after a rather long hiatus, and I have been working on Jonny's Hoo fly. I really like this pattern, but I keep running into a problem with application of the laser dub. It is always either too thick and bulbous, or too wispy and uneven - resulting in a lob sided head that won't track well. I have read Jonny's article on the fly's construction many times, and checked numerous pictures and videos, but none of them gave me a clear idea about the amount of laser dub to use per bunch. Also, is there a preferred method for prepping the dub before tying it in? I would appreciate any help so I can get the technique down before I run out of the dub. Happy Tying! Mark
  8. Thanks, CGG, for posting this. Like you, I have a fondness for synthetic materials because of their consistency, so my love/hate relationship with bucktail makes this new material very intriguing. I'm really interested to know how those candies swim.
  9. Petegray's pix are also helped by the stunning "models" that grace them. Very sexy!
  10. BTW... For all you guys taking pictures of your work: In addition to his exemplary tying, Jonny also demonstrates what fly pictures should always look like: In focus; Properly lit; Details of interest in close up; Composed to convey a sense of depth; A context to provide scale (in these pics, the tape measure); Non-distracting backgrounds. Excellent flies and pictures, sir, as always!
  11. Hey CnR, I live in MD, and I think I can help you out. Send me a PM and maybe we can connect and get you what you need.
  12. I agree with you, South Shore, on all three points - especially the inspiration received from Jonny's work. I'm still trying to get my head around the idea that he is ALSO a great jazz musician & composer AND has a law degree AND is a published author. If you haven't done so already, I would use the Advanced Search and peruse other samples of his work, and Jim Miller, Chris Newsome, Petegray, Wendell, BobPop, etc... This entire site, and the guys who post on it - ROCK!
  13. If I may ask, what glue are you using to form the heads on those craft fur beauties? Liquid Fusion or Tuffleye Flex? Thanks for the MANY inspiring examples you have shared with us...you have motivated me to get back into tying after being away for a long time.
  14. I second the recommendation for Dave Whitlock, and also suggest looking for anything by Chris Helm on the subject. Also, there is a LOT of info on this forum (try posts by 10x10).
