  1. I'm not big into video either, and figure if I want to do video I'll get a video camera (so that wife can do video, I'll do photos)... so instead of the new Nikon D7000, this past Christmas I got the older D90 at a great price. For stills, it's a great camera. I bought it with the do-everything 28-200mm Nikon lens, a great combo. (I also got the f2.8 50mm lens which lets you pretty much take mos indoor shots w/o a flash, and is the closest to the naked eye in perspective.) Just a perspective to consider. I'm quite happy with it.
  2. Howdy! I surf fish up in the Boca Raton area. If you want to use big plugs (rather than bait), in general I'd recommend prowling a mile or so along the beach at sunrise. For that type of fish (meat eater), I'd say in general an incoming tide closer to high is best. While you could catch almost anything at anytime, I'd say your primary upcoming targets would be: May-June: tarpon... you should start seeing them migrating along the beaches, rolling, in the early mornings. Last year was the first year I tried with big plugs, and I've not yet hooked-up with one, but supposedly it's possible. If you google, there's a good article about Terry Parsons (former owner of Wabasso Tackle up near Sebastian) who chases tarpon on the beach with big plugs in the Spring. Or PM me your email address and I'll send it to you. June-Aug: snook right up on the beach. Best for this is a regular 7' rod, 1/4-3/4oz, for small plugs like a Mirrolure Top Dog Jr, or a Super Spook Jr, or a small suspending Crystal Minnow. You can't keep snook during these months, of course. June-Aug: Jack Crevalle, running schools of baitfish up on the beach. When the melee occurs it is incredible... just toss a topwater in the melee and you'll be hooked-up for a nice fight. PM me your phone # and we can chat sometime. I usually fish Boca, and maybe once or twice a month go North to Hutchinson Island, ft pierce, or Sebastian.
  3. howdy, I live in Boca Raton, about 20 mins N of Ft Laud. I'll be targeting tarpon on the beach that time of year. While big plugs can sometimes get you a hookup, in my limited experience your best bet on the beach is to use shrimp to catch an 8-10" blue runner, then hook him up and freeline him out there 150yds or so. I'd say early morning and late afternoons would be best. When the runner gets tired in about 20-30 mins, something will grab him... either a shark or a tarpon usually. I think I hooked up with 2 last Spring in this manner... hoping to get one to the beach this year. If you want to fish Boca's beach, shoot me a PM. PS - good tackle shop down there is T&R Tackle on Commercial Blvd 2 blks from the beach (they can also give u advice), or Angler's Tackle in Dania Beach (South Ft Laud, near the airport). :-)
  4. if ur on the island, try the Island Cow for lunch/dinner. The crunchy fish tacos are *really* good! :-)
  5. I use long sleeves and a Buff, then use Blue Lizard for nose/cheeks and the back of my hands. (I apply with a latex glove so as not to add any sunblock scent to the bait.)
  6. Singer Island in Florida by West Palm Beach? (or is there one in NJ area?) If FL, now should be good for pompano on the beach. Use a multi-hook pompano rig with sand fleas, salted clams, or fresh shrimp.
  7. Took the survey... good. Would be nice to see the results eventually...
  8. I'd recommend chrome with florescent orange head.
  9. Is this the one you mean? "Cabela's Pro Series Vacuum Sealer" Regular price $299 now on sale for $199 ? I think I have a $20 off coupon so that would make it $179 and a great deal? Looking at Cabela's site, seems all the sealers have very mixed reviews, except the $499 unit that has 229 reviews with a great avg of 4.7 out of 5 stars. Seems like the one to get, but I don't think I have $500 for a sealer (since I just do fish... no deer, etc.)... maybe if a *really* good sale comes along... Thanks.
  10. From what I've read/heard locally, Juno probably best in area, followed by Lake Worth, Anglin's (in Ft Laud) and Dania (further South in Dania Beach), then Deerfield Beach pier (N of Anglin's), the Pompano (last). From N to S they are: Juno, Lake Worth, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Anglin's, Dania Beach.
  11. nice action! Yeah, they startle me enuf in a yak... I can imagine if I was wading!
  12. If u want to fish the beach (and that's my favorite place to fish), I'd recommend longest rod u have that can cast at least 2oz (preferably 3, 4, or 5). (Be sure to use a shock leader so it doesn't snap-off and send a pyramid sinker into somebody's skull. General rule of thumb is 10# test for each ounce.) Put on a pompano rig (3-hook rig) with sinker on bottom. Use sand fleas (live are best, but frozen from T&R Tackle or Anglin's pier will do), or fresh shrimp, and you should have some action. If you put out a half-fist of fresh fish (blue runner that u catch on shrimp above), or even a frozen mullet head from tackle shop, go at dusk, you still have a good chance of hooking up with a shark. Just don't make a spectacle with it in front of kids and carefully release it (or legally harvest it without blood-crazed spectacle), since we're currently getting a lot of pressure on beach shark fishing down here in FL. Exercise your rights, but I suggest keep it low key.
  13. Howdy! If you have a teaser, is there a difference which you tip with shrimp? the teaser or the Goofy jig? Thanks!
  14. Not sure where best where they have hotels on the beach, but the beach just North of the Dania Beach Pier is usually good... you have about a mile of beach until u get to the Port Everglades inlet. Park at the pier (meters) and walk N on beach, or go into the park on the N side of the pier (I forget the name). Good luck!
  15. NOT that I've caught one (still on my target list), but suggestions are: if u want to be able to handle a good-sized tarpon I'd suggest something like a MH rod about 8' that is rated for casting 1-3oz, a reel like a Shimano Stradic 8000 or Daiwa Saltist 4500, 40# braid line, use 60# flourocarbon leader longer than the size of the fish you want to catch. Lures include big topwaters (lke a 1oz Badonk-a-donk or Tsunami Talkin' Popper, etc), or a big paddle-tail swimbait (Storm mullet, etc), or a 2.5oz Krocadile spoon. Or, perhaps best, freeline a 7-10" baitfish on a 6/0 circle hook (hooked lightly thru back just behind the dorsal fin). Good fish to use are mullet or a blue runner which you can usually catch on the beach with shrimp. Good luck!
