In Lieu of Best Reel, Best Lure, etc Let's See Your Snow Shovel
Rickbgm replied to Wet Head's topic in Main Forum
I can't. My wife's not done using it. -
Back in September a 42' Cigarette boat hit a dock on Seneca Lake in upstate NY. He was going full bore in the dark (and I think that alcohol was involved). The boat tore out the dock and continued across the road ending up on the porch of a bed and breakfast.Somehow no one was seriously injured. You don't need a brain to buy a boat, they sell them to anyone.

Try a Hot n Tot plug in fire tiger color. The trick is to annoy them until they strike. They will not feed if they are coming in to spawn because their intestines have stopped working, that's why they die. They will still strike to protect their roe or because they feel threatened. A fast vibrating, bright color plug will usually trigger a strike.

I'm going to wait for Alan Hawks review before buying.

I think what you are referring to are slinkys (not the toy) they are made by taking the center core out of parachute cord then melt one end shut and fill with shot or BB's. You then seal the other end. These are then attached to your line using a 3 way swivel . They do run over the rocks much better than regular sinkers. BUT, before you go make sure you read ALL the Lake Ontario trib regs. You can not have more than 4' from your bait to the weight so a sliding weight can not move more than 4' up the line. They WILL fine you for this. I saw 4 guys get nailed for it last year. NYDEC pulls wardens from all over the state to patrol the Salmon/Steelhead runs. Also, make sure you have Korkers or felts because the rocks are extremely slippery. Good Luck and have fun.

Stripers, like many fish, usually hit a lure from the side or beneath rather than from the rear. Unlike, say a blue fish, they do not have the teeth to hold on to a bait that tries to swim away. This is why most fish are caught on the front hook. If you replace the front hook with any single it will probably lay flat against the lure resulting in poor hook ups. If you want to try using a single circle hook I would use one quite a bit larger than the treble you replaced so that it clears the sides of the lure when it lays against it. I always use single hooks on the rear hook and, since I don't like trebles, I have tried using them on the center but have not had good success doing so..

What hooks does the SP minnow come standard with?
Rickbgm replied to WickedStriper's topic in Main Forum
I changed all the hooks and spit rings on my SP's last year and they were a lot weaker than the replacements. This year I bought a couple of the Savage minnows and the hooks and split rings are way stronger than the SP's. -
Dick's started as a B&T many years ago. I sold Dick Stack bait when I was a teenager. He was a great guy and if you needed anything that he did not have he would get it for you. Unfortunately since he retired and has since passed away his son Ed decided to expand it and has been very successful doing so. I rarely go there anymore because they are more interested in appealing to golfers, tennis players and yuppies than the sportmen that Dick catered to. I will say that they do still stand behind their products which was one of Dick's policies. I fish in a half a dozen different states and strongly believe in supporting the local B&T's no matter where I go. They not only have what you need but are usually able to give you advise on what, when and where to find fish.

My wife said she didn't won't me to buy another boat ( I already have 3), so I bought a new truck.

We had a mass shooting that killed 15 people at the American Civic Association here in Binghamton back in 2009. The shooter was a naturalized Vietmanese immigrant that believed that the people there were always making fun of him because he had a hard time speaking english. The handguns that he used were all legally bought and registered by him at Gander Mountain. New York has very strict hand gun licenceing and registration but since he had no previous arrest record or history of mental illness no gun registration law would have stopped him. With the millons of guns already in the hands of Americans there is absolutely no way that you can keep them out of the hands of those wishing to do harm to others. In my area alone I have seen at least 400 guns offered at auctions in the last 2 months and while most of them required background checks many did not. If you set out to kill someone it isn't likely that you are going to worry about breaking a gun law.

Would you sell your car because some a**holes drink and drive and kill people. Guns don't kill, people kill. I am not opposed to stricter gun control but it won't change much until we deal with why people do unthinkable things such as this.

I just nailed the plastic J hangars for PVC pipe to the rafters in cellar. You can buy them pretty cheap at any place that sells PVC pipe. I think the ones I used are for 2" pipe.

What is Weakest Fighting Freshwater Fish
Rickbgm replied to Beastly Backlash's topic in Freshwater Fishing
For me it's a toss up between walleye and lake trout. Where I live walleyes are very abundant and I have caught literally hundreds of them but have still not caught one over 10 lbs. where as I have caught a lot of lakers in the 20 lb range and no matter how big they get they make a run and give up. -
Buying your own screws to use as studs on wader boots
Rickbgm replied to albacized's topic in Main Forum
The rocks are VERY slippery but studs are not necessary for Salmon River but felts are. Studs work but I prefer felts because they cover the entire bottom of the boot so when you step on a rock with your instep they don't slip. Back when I first started fishing there 30+ years ago we glued indoor outdoor carpet to our boots with rubber contact cement. It worked ok but had to be replaced after 4 or 5 trips. I do use studs at the CC Canal because felts won't help on the rocks there. -
Remember that the hook gap has to be less than 1/2" and you can't just go by size because different companies and hook styles do not have a "standard" gap. For estaz egg flies I like #6 short shank hooks but for floats and beads I like a little larger hook. I've been fishing several of the rivers and streams up north once or twice a week since the beginning of September and the salmon run has been so heavy that we have been averaging probably 10 to 15 of them to every trout. Now that the run is ending the trout fishing should really pickup.
