I have a 1st Gen z25 that I've fished hard for several years without a single mechanical issue or problem. It's been a solid 2 seasons since I've sent it in for service but the last time I did I had nothing but smooth sailing. Since the season is winding down I plan to send it in again in a few weeks so hopefully nothing will have changed.
  2. My only issue with the Hogy's is that they're way too fragile. Bang them off a piling or god forbid a rock even slightly and they shatter. They need to beef up their epoxy formula. I have Maria's that are the better part of 6 years old that have seen lots of action and abuse that are still in one piece. My buddy was retrieving a brand new, first cast, fresh out of the package jig in and banged it off the side of his boat and it shattered the epoxy. Not at all a huge hit by any means.
  3. I Love the Derby and what it stands for and I see how much good it does for the island community, but a big part of me really dislikes the competition aspect of it. (This is coming from an extraordinarily competitive guy.) Don't get me wrong winning the Derby is most definitely on my bucket list and as long as I can I will register and give it my all, but I've never viewed fishing as a competition between me and other people. In a lot of ways the lack of competition is why I love to fish. In my opinion no one needs to "prove" their fishing worth by winning a daily pin, being a Grand Leader, Hat Trick or Grand Slam winner let alone winning it all, but unfortunately during the Derby because of prizes dangled out there for the winners some people take on that winner take all/by any means necessary mentality and it ruins my enjoyment of the process. Not totally, but it definitely just "feels" different fishing this month.
  4. Another vote of no confidence here. Haven't caught anything other than a small schoolie earlier in the season. Save your $ and just buy the normal SPs.
  5. I have this same reel. It's hard to describe how well it performs. Anyone who buys it will not regret it. If I didn't already have one I'd be all over it for this price.
  6. Don't really care about the specific brand or maker (Commando, Mak, Ebbpoint, Flatlander, Gear up blah, blah, blah). All I care about is that the bag is well made and in top shape. What'cha got?
  7. Yes, the cut filled in this spring. So when the birds aren't closing access you can drive on the beach from Norton Pt all the way out to the Gut if you want. For someone who likes driving on the sand (and doesn't mind paying/can afford the pricey Trustee's OSV permits) the Vineyard provides an amazing amount of beach to drive on.
  8. If you air down enough even knobby tires will be fine in the sand. I see huge lifted trucks/jeeps out on the beach all the time. The lighting issue is tricky. My thoughs on the matter are as follows: If you're familiar with an area and have decent vision and can navigate safely you should only use your running lights when moving your rig in an area where people are fishing. If you're vision is poor and you're either new to beach driving or unfamiliar with the spot exercise caution, be safe and use your lights.
  9. I had a blackhawk tactical belt that served me well for many years, but as it gets colder the metal belt loop was a pain to open/close, and the lack of rigidity kind of sucked. Just got a Flatlander the other day. Haven't had a chance to use it yet but it looks/feels fantastic. Time will tell if it can withstand the abuse its about to receive.
  10. YED = Yellow Eyed Devil = Bluefish. Tins = Metal lures Newb questions are OK, especially when it comes to slang/acronyms that aren't clearly spelled out.
  11. I really got into the blues today and kicked off the season in style. Lots of fish from 3 to just under 10 lbs (most were in the 6-8 lb range though). There was no sign of them on the surface but blind casting various tins led to a hook up every second or third cast for the better part of 2 hrs. All of them were puking up either squid or tinker macks. After not fishing all winter going from 0 to almost blitz status at points has both my hand and shoulder a bit sore, but what a blast.
  12. Most definitely the sinking, it casts better and can be used in more situations.
  13. I haven't found an SP color that didn't work. If the fish were around last year they were hitting SPs regardless of the color. It's been said so many times, but it is worth repeating. Make sure to change out the stock hooks for VMCs.
  14. I love my 1st Gen double roller 25. It is a fish catching, surf casting machine. But like all sealed reels it's not a finesse reel. If you plan on seriously dunking / submerging your reel on a regular basis get what best suits your needs or feels best to you. ZB, VS, Torque...all will get the job done.
  15. Between myself and my brother we easily caught well over a hundred (probably over 200) bass both big and small on SPs last year. One night in Sept we slayed 15-30 lb fish on every cast for 3 straight hrs on SPs alone. I stopped counting after 30 fish. The plugs had no color left and were still getting slammed. Easily my most productive plug last year.
