My friends at Pequest told me about that breed. A new salmonid breed they are introducing into NJ waters, Salmo frankenstein. Extremely voracious. I will need to curb my naked fly-fishing with that thing swimming around!
  2. Anyone else catch the news regarding the maintenance failure at the OCGS yesterday evening around 5:00pm? News reports hundreds of bluefish killed off and more fish spp. to surface today as the station works on bringing the water temps back up. Not very good timing for them seeing how they are trying to renew their 20yr contract. Well, if nothing else the state may get more money for their I&E programs. Cheers.
  3. Shadow, Wow, a found deer hide on the beach. I imagine in NJ someone would get a ticket for littering for dumping a hide like that. Personally I would never handle any skin or other part of a deer that I didn't know where it came from, how long it had been sitting, or how it was prepared, transported, handled... What exactly do you want to do with it? Make a pair of boots? Preserve the skin? Use the fur/hair for fly tying? I presume the latter since you are posting in this forum. That said, you may not want to preserve all of the hide just select parts. In my limited fly tying experience I only use whitetail deer hair taken from the belly, & the tail. Even though patches from the back, rump, and neck areas are used in some fly tying applications. If you are concerned with preserving only small samples of the skin, I am sure if you do a search for "Curing/ drying bucktails" on this web site you will come up with more than enough information to get you started. I know because that is what lead me to SOL in the first place. A Google search for Drying / Curing Bucktails.
  4. name is Scotty Jr. and he would really benefit from the bonding experience that this rod could bring him while fishing with his father. My best friend, SOL member Stormchucker, has recently been granted custody of his son, Scotty Jr., after his mother kicked him out of her house. He has just entered the 6th grade and starting over with his Dad in Atlantic Highlands area. My friend Scott has always had a love for fishing but his obligations to his family puts him on a really limited fishing schedule. I always end up giving him so much fishing gear & tackle so he can share in my passion of Striper Fishing. With his son moving in with him this past fall, he has shifted from a part-time dad to a full-time dad. (If there is such a thing). His son shares his dad's love of the salt and every summer he attends the MAST academy out on the Hook. It has been the one small thing his Dad could do for him that they could have in common. They have gone fishing in the past but has always had to use Dad's gear. I think Scotty Jr. is a great candidate for this opportunity. If you decide for it to go that way, I would be more than happy for him to reach out to you via PM or other so you can get his contact info and check it out for yourself. REgardless what happens, that is a wonderful gesture on your behalf and a great way to get the youth of today interested in our resources. My hat's off to you! : :Edit remark: : Didn't see it was already given away. Congrats!
  5. I have never owned one and would like one.
  6. Great Pic indeed... Right now I feel like Han Solo frozen in Carbonite. Only in my case I am holding the flyrod & looking out longinly towards the rolling surf... Point me East Jaba...and thaw me in the spring.
  7. Thank you everyone for your generous comments on this thread. My mind is made up and I will definately be purchasing both of these books in paperback. Tommycod, that is an amazing idea on the ILL. A++ and my hat's off to you for using your public library in this manner! Why listen to the opinions of movie critics when you could simply go see the movie for yourself? Thank you each and everyone for sounding in on my question. I am grateful.
  8. I would like to add two of Kenny Abrames books to my fishing library; Striper Moon and A Perfect Fish. Both of these books are frequently mentioned as "must reads" and currently I am leaning torwards the paperback versions (availability & price issues). Herein lies my question: For those of you that have looked through both, is there any information left out in the paperback version, that I would be better of having the hardcover? Or do they contain the same materials? I would love to hear all of your feedback on this. Thanks in advance. GP
  9. Often overlooked and a great idea! I once tried this using a red/black barred hackle under yellow hackles to liken the appearance of the "Chicken scratch" bomber. Worked out so-so. Sorry Chicky, no pic yet...
