Add to that the transcendental philosophies emerging from europe and you have the bedrock on which ideas such as life liberty and joy can be established as a social construct. See that's the catch, you need an understanding of one's place in the material and metaphysical world before you can build a society or nation. The basic understanding of the founders, in essence, is that human kind is a brotherhood. However, because some men refuse to follow their conscience we must protect ourselves for their inequity. That's what government does. It is a necessary evil, a badge of shame that is proportionate is size to the amout of inequity in society. when you have a corrupt society government increases in size to mitigate those inequities. So to answer your question it is enlightened-self-interest which serves as the foundaton from which luxuries such as life and liberty and joy emerge. It is fundamentally about freedom of mind followed by freedom of association, and freedom of action.   5. Plugchucker, Keep in mind an aquarium can support approx 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. Less fish is better to help maintain nitrite, nitrate, and amonia levels. A 5 gallon tank will held about 5 neon tetras, or 5 guppies or 5 similarly sized fish. A ten gallon is a great starter size. I use 10s for breeding and quarentine befor they go into the big puddle If your budget allows I would use a Tetra brand external filter. Real easy to clean, quiet, and will keep the water crystal clear as ong as the chemistry is balance. Skip the undergravel filter, a real mess to clean and not the best for water clarity. I like the idea of catching killies for the tank. I'm even considering a temperate saltwater tank based on that recommendation. I can see sand eels, mullet and spot eagerly awaiting feeding time. Striper feeding that is. Fish keeping is a great hobby for kids of any age. Good luck

  11. And my original point is that countries which have higher rates of public spending and taxes have a higher quality of life and better outcomes for what they do spend. But then they are not dominated by capitalist thinking that puts individuals above common good. The problem is the character of the American public. Every man for themselves and dog eat dog. Where's the shared sacrifice? Whatever happed to the idea that American workers were the best in the world? It's a ship of fools trying to one-up one another.

  13. These are specific examples, which fail to illuminate the big picture. What about the silt runoff from logging which is choking the Klamath River and decimating salmon and dungeness crabs? There is no logging company paying for that, is there? There are always exceptions to the rule. But by and large corporation do profit at taxpayer expense. Meanwhile there are people blameing government assistance to the poor as the root of all economic disparity. Gimme a break, the rich screw the poor. It's a historical fact not a theory.
  14. I think a definition of wealth is required befor we can even have a reasonable discussion. There are two basic forms of goods and service Profit making and loss leaders. Police do not make profits but without police it's unlikely anyone but the strongest and most ruthless will have profits. Same with trees. Without trees ecology will die and so will we. I suggest that quality of life MUST be factored into any equasion of wealth. Whereas it seems both you and JohnW suggest that wealth is a measure of personal economic standing. I think that is both short sighted and selfish. Some here like to use the term "being forced" to do things, like give back to the community, as a reasonable action in recognition of the communities sacrifice. If you chop down trees that means someone else is denied access to those same trees. In essence, one person is deprived of the resource while another profits. If we the people agree to let a private party develope a resource it's socially responsible that the private party reimburse or compensate other parties which are denied access to the resource. If you don't like the tree example lets talk about water right in the western US states. If cattle farmers get water that means vegtable farmers don't. Noto to mention how individuals must ration when cattle farmers have more than they deserve. Trees are wealth, which in turn can be refined into more desireable products. Following your logic crude oil is not wealth, only gasoline and diesel fuel are (refined products).

  16. I suggest that if any corporation reaps rewards from using public lands, that is a redistribution of wealth (theft of commonwealth property). It becomes even more egregious when the timber, coal, oil, mineral wealth is provided to private parties BELOW market value. Why should a private company sell timber at taxpayer expense and then keep the profits? Because of special interests, lobbists, and corruption. Consider that the logging roads are developed by taxpayers, the resulting environmental damage is cleaned up by the taxpayer, the loss of hunting and fishing grounds are paid for by taxpayers, and pollution from processing the timber is paid for by taxpayers all the while timber companies get tax incentives to cut down more forests andf the CEO/shareholder gets subsidized by ... The Taxpayer. It's shameful and a disgrace that anyone would support these big industries and their entitlements.

What is most distressing is how the paragraph attempts to put the weight on "entitlements" that go to poor, sick, and elderly citizens of the USA. It's shameful and selfish to single out the most needy Americans. Meanwhile, how big was dick Cheneys tax break last year? If he gave away 6.8 million and that is 77% of AGI who's really reaping the benefits of entitlements? See above Cheney tax break Again, the target is the poor. Who disproportianatly uses mass transportation? Not CEOs. it's the janitors, dishwashers, waitstaff, and receptionist types. Single, working poor, minority and elderly people. Yeah, lets do away with public transportation so the poor can suffer more hardship just getting to their wage slavery jobs. You have to be heartless to pick on the working poor. Why no outcry over corporate agriculcture subsidies, big pharma tax breaks, and big oil subsidies? The futility is in finding honest and morally upright walking statesmen/statespeople. You don't find much budgeting futility in: Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, Canada, Belgium ect. This is because money trumps honesty, and peace too evidently. That is perhaps the only relevant issue presented in the entire C&P And sadly, the article ends by linking the welfare state (commonwealth) and political battels over money and by extension power/control. The real battle is between have and have-not, insiders and outsiders. The nonsense of R vs L is a political wedge which plays to insecurities such as wealth, terror, masculinity, religious zealotry, and bigoted zenophobia.

The implication here is that social welfare is subordinbate or less desireable to a free market, aka capitalism. What is this premise based on? 19th century economic "theory" proposed by John Stewart Mills. Sadly, the facts are in after over 200 years of trial and error(s). Capitalism succeeds in one area only, consolidation of weath in the hands of a minority. Any doubts? Just look at income distribution and the means of the accumulated wealth. What is not theory or in dispute is how social welfare states such as: Netherlands Sweden Spain Canada Belgium ect All have higher standards of living, universal healthcare, better educational outcomes, lower infant mortality, lower crime ect. If not, she's unfit for higher office. Yes, the Republicans have lied about just about everything! But her vote was reckless and she knew it. She needs to own up to the stupidity of giving away congressional authority to start a war. She is in a tough spot, of her own making. She tried to triangulate the Iraq and terrorism issues to boost her standing. Remember her recent anti-flag burning proposal? She is an opportunistic politician, just like Joe Liarman. Please don't resort to demeaning "most Americans" as too stupid just because they see through Hillary's faux populist agenda. She is all about Big Business...Wall Mart, Tyson Farms, et al. Wesley Clark or John Edwards are much better choices.
  24. I agree, no way! Two major reasons: First, she is DLC (corporatist, DINO) She is republican lite. Second, she won't take back her authorization for war. This is a huge issue and deserves it's own thread. In summary, she doesn't regret her vote for war, she regrets how Bush handled it. That means she does/did endorse regime change and pre-emptive war. She's about as big a sell-out as Joe Loserman. But Joe is King of the Sell-outs.
