I prefer my 12' 3" telephone poles. They reach out and touch fish in the middle and have the the backbone to muscle in any fish in the strongest of Canal currents. Never experienced an interference reaching back to launch a plug or jig. No problem traversing the Canal Service Road on my bike either.

They have been there since the 60's that I can remember. Very likely much longer than that. Used to be a $5 bounty for every seal nose turned in. They were good eating too.

The perceived reduction of seals in the Canal during warmer months is directly tied to the increasing boat traffic. As for Harbor Seals eating stripe bass, they are as opportunistic as the next apex predator. Fish is food therefore a slightly injured or bleeding stripe bass placed back can easily become a meal for a hungry seal. Schoolie size bass are likely on the menu as well. Are seals a major threat to stripe bass, not likely.

Obviously you know more than the present owner. Buy it and run it the way you want, or accept it for what it is: a successfully operated institution since 1946.

The Penn reel you have is not a "Braid Friendly" reel. There are people are using fireline on that and similiar reels with success. This is because fire line is not a braid but rather an extruded plastic....high tech mono. The roller assembly and spool travel of the 850 is designed for mono. Braid friendly reels use a different roller design and traverse the spool in a longer travel path to accomodate braid's perculiarities. There is nothing wrong with mono. It has many ardent followers. Unless distance is crucial to catching fish, your set-up will likely keep you happy and catching fish for some time to come.
