The original model has an anti-reverse bearing so there is no handle slop, which was backed up with spring-loaded dogs on a ratchet gear. Anti-reverse bearings can fail especially at high drag settings, and this setup provides a backup in case of failure. However, the spring loaded dogs are very noisy when you turn the reel handle. So in order to improve upon the sales appeal for the USA market they modified the anti-reverse dogs to create a 'silent anti-reverse'. There is nothing wrong with the discontinued 'noisy' reels.
