  1. I used to 'yak fish off Race Point, awesome scenery, lived there for three or four years... A humpback & her calf spent weeks hanging out off the light. Once I saw a great white out there (just the fin), but then it chased a seal onto shore in front of my pals on the beach. They said it had to be 12'.
  2. Hey Jeff, thanks for the kind note! I'm interested in all that & I'll email you tonight. I actually work in Smithfield. -- Matt
  3. Anybody want to get together & do some 'yak fishing this fall? I'm new to the area (I've only 'yak fished on outer Cape Cod, for stripers & blues), I moved here to take a job, and I don't have anyone to fish with. I've never fished for tog/seabass & I'd like to try it out when the weather cools. I fish an old Wilderness Systems Tarpon 160. Also, I'm told I owe the forum a joke, and as a proud West Virginian, I'll offer up a sheep joke (our favorite native genre): Q. What do you call a farmer who raises goats and sheep? A. Bisexual. -Matt
  4. Thanks! I'll crosspost to the Kayak forum, and as I am a proud West Virginian, I'll share a sheep joke here (our favorite genre): Q. What do you call a farmer who raises goats and sheep? A. Bisexual.

  6. Thanks for the tips! Lots to think about... Sounds like March is a transitional month.
  7. ...where would you go? I have a spring break March 10th-18th, and I'm thinking of lining up a family trip with a couple fishing days on the side, in warmer climates, somewhere in North America. Been kicking around ideas including Louisiana redfish or mixed species in Florida (like Everglades or the Keys) with focus on snook/redfish, but I don't really know the seasons. Maybe I'm overlooking some options? Either Florida or New Orleans would be pleasing to the family and close to fishing...
  8. I just moved to Providence this fall but between a new job and a toddler, I didn't get out to fish at all--and all my fishing buddies are on Cape Cod so I just fell into the rut of sitting at home, since I didn't know the area. Hoping to turn it around this coming season. I've been mostly a striper and blues guy, but I want to branch out and target tautog & sea-bass. I've read up on the tog basics (green crabs, rocks, heavy line, tap tap tap), but would any of you mind sharing more specific advice? Are they tide-dependent like stripers? Not looking for spot burns, but can I get into them in the Providence area or should I drive out and target the coastline instead? I don't have a boat, but I do have a fishing yak.
  9. Awesome. Good chance my contract will be extended another year, so it will be cool to catch the different runs...
  10. Thanks for the insight, guys. I really just want to learn some water in the fall so I'm set up for spring/summer when I can really focus....
  11. hey folks, I just moved to Providence to work for the year & I don't know the local waters at all. When does the "fall run" usually happen in Rhode Island? And how's it been the last couple years? I'm asking because I lived on outer Cape Cod for three years where I got heavy into striper fishing, but every year I was there, the fall run kinda sucked and/or fizzled out completely. So I don't have a good sense of timing on it. I'm living out of boxes right now but the gear comes out soon... Thanks for any insight. Looking forward to trying some new water.
