Riverton…. Bass Pro Shops progress thread?
bbfish replied to Slowwwride's topic in New Jersey Fishing
I remember hearing rumors about it right when I graduated college, so sometime around 2009. Been a long time coming. -

Is Sea Fox one of the stage names of the girls at Centerfolds? It rings a bell.

I understand it was hyperbole. I also stand by what I said.

Taking more than your fair share of fish is unethical. Killing someone over it is evil.

No one keeps 20 bass for themselves. They’re clearly selling them. I’d call them less operations and more just guys skirting the rules to make some extra cash. I doubt any of these guys are getting rich off this. They’re still breaking the law though. Is that the level of a crime that amounts to hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines/forfeiture of property/jailtime? No, certainly don’t think so. Not at all.

I agree there is a scale in crimes, couldn't agree more actually. My point is some guys in this thread would want to impose the same punishments one could get for manslaughter to someone who takes too many stripers to try and make some extra cash on the side. Its wrong, but not hundreds of thousands of dollars and a decade in jail wrong. I'll say that again: That's the scale of punishment one would expect for manslaughter in NJ. If you think taking extra fish is equivalent to taking a human life, I don't know what to tell you. Its just plain old wrong in my book. I think this group just gets sensationalized on it because its something you find personally affects us. Its comforting to know that most people in this thread probably wouldn't be selected in a jury for any case like this, there's absolutely no way any of us would be seen as impartial. At least I hope. I doubt many on the outside of the fishing world would agree with the draconian measures stated here. Poachers are a problem. They should be dealt with accordingly. I would love if NJ could get it together and have more enforcement out there so more of these guys are getting caught and having to pay. I'd be fine paying for a license each year to ensure it (although we all know in NJ that money wouldn't go for its intended use). That being said 100 bucks a fish is probably too low. 10k per fish plus jail time is insanely high, even after multiple offenses. That's "no compassion for other human beings" high. On an unrelated note, what's the record for most downvotes in a thread?

I can agree on that. And I agree the punishment like most crimes should go up with each occurrence. One previous post told me 250k with 10 years in jail as a third offense. I think the real crime there would be levying that heavy of a punishment for something of this nature.
-
100 in a 25 is a far greater crime than poaching in my opinion, for the exact reason you stated, people died. The scale there in my mind is nearing 100:1. I think Vehicular manslaughter can be up to 10-20 years in jail with up to 200k fine. I don’t think even a third round of killing 19 bass should be anywhere near that punishment. I understand you don’t think it should be, but there are people out here that think it should. The irony here is that it’s a really good odds that there are people in this thread that have or still have a few too many drinks and decide to drive. Given my experience in life I’d put it at almost a mathematical certainty. I’m not saying it’s all of you or anyone in particular. Just that it’s a fairly common high punishment crime that many people still do quite literally all the time. Theres a certain amount of irony of wanting to watch someone else burn when pretty much everyone has skeletons in their closet. That’s what I meant when I originally asked if everyone has their ducks in a row. If someone ethically thinks another person deserves these fines, then turn yourself in for your past transgressions and face the music. None of you are going to convince me that living in a highly punitive society is a good thing. These attitudes are how you have people end up in jail for decades for something like marijuana possession. That’s a rare case I know, but I just don’t believe it should even be possible. It’s a slippery slope levying seemingly unlimited punishment.

I can’t imagine wanting to send someone to ten years hard time for something like this. I really can’t. Just absolutely destroy another persons life like that for making a few bad choices. My point earlier in this thread is that I’d guess every single person in this thread has probably made some bad choices before. Some were probably caught, most probably weren’t, and id imagine there was some repeat offenders. That kind of penalty is putting it up there with stuff like arson or actually violently assaulting another person.

How much time in the clink on top of that?
-
What’s an appropriate jail sentence to judge Reeferrob in this scenario. What’s the whole tree? 20 years?
-
Ok, let’s just go back to my question of why don’t we just execute them right away? That should be a deterrent as well. But the thing is that would be nuts. Absolutely Bonkers. I think seizing of boats for killing a few fish is bonkers as well. It’s overreach. It’s a minor crime, it’s still a crime, but it’s a pretty minor crime.

That's fine with me. My point is that there are plenty of guys shouting for max punishment who have for a certainty skirted the law in the past, and its probably something that some other group would take to heart. We're heavily connected to striped bass so I understand that some guys take it personally. In the grand scheme of things, its a relatively low level crime in my book. Poachers stink, its unethical and obviously illegal, but its not exactly throw the book at them and confiscate 100k worth of belongings material.
-
Ok hit em with a little bigger of a fine. Its a slippery slope with what we levy for any crime though. Why not just execute em on the spot?
-
I mean do you report absolutely every financial transaction to the IRS? You pay sales tax on anything and everything youve ever sold? You ever gone 55 in a 40? I'm all for punishments for breaking the law but taking away a fishing vessel over a striped bass is pretty looney tunes in my book.
