  1. I was hoping for something a little more helpful than 'test them and it will be obvious' . What two or three things are obvious so I can focus on these things when I test them. I am just looking for some insight from those who have already been down this road. I don't want to miss something simple and then regret it. So far I have noted the following from fourm discussions... 1. Hobie do not track well without rudder. 2. Hobie have had some issues with cracks and dents. 3. Hobie can manuver in shallow water with pedal system in place 4. Fins can be folded up against the hull when launching or shallow water. 1. Native track well in any configuration 2. Native can go in reverse 3. Native needs at least a foot of clearance so prop does not hit bottom. 4. Drive unit can easily be flipped up out of the water while you are in the boat and you can continue on with a paddle. Also makes lauching easy. Please help me build on this list. So far I see more negatives for the Hobie. Most noteably the cracks.
  2. Hello all, I have been Yaking for a couple of years now and I love it. Seeing the pedal kayaks and how your hands are freed up for fishing looks fantastic. I primarily use my Kayak for lake fishing but sometimes I fish the Florida coast. I want to buy a pedal yak but am up in the air as to which one is best. I want to know what people think about these two drive systems and the pros and cons. Seems like most people on this forum love the Hobie, but I see post after post of complaints like 'the boat does not track well when paddling' and several complaints of cracked hulls and dents, etc. The Mirage system seems pretty cool but is it better than the Propel and why? On the other hand I have not found much conversation on the Native yaks. The Propel system looks efficient, has reverse, and can flip up out of the water when in shallow water, etc. I know it has some clearance issues but to be honest, I do most of my fishing in deeper lake water. So please give me some compelling information so I can make a good choice. Regardless of what everyone says, I do plan on testing both out to see for myself.
  3. I am using braided line for the first time. Going to fish for Reds, Snook, etc in Florida. Using 30 and 50 lb line. Should I use some kind of leader or just tie directly to my lures. Going to be using BaitBusters, Top Dawgs, and live bait unless I am given better information.
  4. Thanks to the reply to my Everglades questions. Unfortunatley I am unable to PM (dont have enough posts yet). Are you able to PM me and I can get your contact info that way? THANKS DAVID
  5. Hey, thanks for the response and offer to contact. Unfortunatley I don't think I have enough posts yets to be able to PM you. Can you PM me your contact info instead? Thanks David
  6. HI, I am planning a kayak trip to the 1000 Islands area and we will camp at Chokoloskee island. I have never fished in south florida waters before. We will just be planning day trips out from our camp site. I would really appreciate any info you guys can provide on how to fish and what type of lures or bait are best. We have no particular species in mind but I would love to hook up with some Tarpon. I was thinking of using x-raps and DOA baitbusters and maybe some type of live bait. Thanks!
  7. Any first hand reports on fish kills in the Keys. I am planning a trip in May and was wondering if this will affect the overall fishing.
  8. Thanks for all the tips. Regarding shrimp for bait. Would you normaly toss out an unweighted shrimp and just let out line as it swims away? Would I cast and retrieve to the edges of mangrove trees? I definately want to use live shrimp as much as possible to max my chances while there. BTW how much can I expect to spend on these little gems?
  9. Thanks for the tips Chadwickfeesh. Interesting thought - '90% of fish in 10% of the water' So the big question is... how do I find that 10%? What are the characteristics of fishy water? Rocks, depth, Island. Can you just look out and tell that one spot is better than another or you just have to fish it and see what happens.
  10. I am staying in a place at Marathon Key. I'll post pics when I get back.
  11. Hello fellow fishermen! I am going to be staying on the Marathon Key in May. I will be bringing my Kayak. I would appreciate any help you guys might be able give. These are some basic questions as I do not ocean fish from my kayak often. My goal is to catch some snook, tarpon and maybe grouper. 1. Is an anchor essential? 2. From some of the things I have read in various forums the fishing is so good I should be able to plop my kayak in the water at any likley looking spot and catch fish. Should I be fishing at specific locations or is any old spot good enough to give a try? 3. For Tarpon should I use live bait or artificials. What type of each do you suggest. 4. How far off the beach should I normally be to start fishing. 5. I have a Pen Squidder. Is this a sufficent reel for the fish? I plan on using 20-30 lb test. 6. I have read a lot about the mangrove islands and how people like to fish the 'trails'. I assume these are like creeks through the island. Is it best to fish these 'trails', along the edge of the trees along the shore or get off the islands a bit and fish surrounding water. Or does it matter 7. Do you think I will be able to fish the bridge pilings from a kayak and would this be a good type of structure to target or would I be better off trolling lures are drifting with a shrimp or two. I know there is no one answer to most of these questions. Just trying to get a feel as to what I should focus on with my limited vacation time. Well thats all I can think of right now. Thanks in advance for any help.
