  1. I have this exact setup. You are going to love it. I used Fuji Ti Torzites on it - PERFECT!
  2. The 9' 1-3 Cedros Surf rod is not bad. I keep that rod at my apartment for grab and go short plugging trips after work and it performs pretty well. I have no complaints tossing light plugs, mainly SP Minnows and 1.5 to 2 oz metals. I have it paired with an SSV 4500, 20# braid or Slammer 460 with 30#. Worth the money IMO.
  3. I suggest leaving the pp 20 and fish it. 4000 shimano should take enough pp20 lb. to be adequate.
  4. The 2 on the bottom are my true edc. A Leatherman Juice S2 and a Mini Griptillian. They go with me everyday to work. The Spyderco Paramilitary 2 with brown scales is CPM S35VN and my edc away from work. The Bark River Gunny also in CPMS35VN rides on my fishing belt. I have a custom Kydex sheath for it. All are razor sharp thanks to a bunch of Japanese stones I use for my kitchen knives.
  5. Avet SX MC has a super smooth drag. If it's in your budget, I use a Daiwa Saltiga Hyperspeed that I static magged. It's an unreal reel.
  6. I have 2 of these rods. I use a 5000 size Shimano with them and they are perfect. Start with a Stradic and work your way up to a Stella SW. When I plan to wade in the water, I use a Penn SSV 4500 or Stella 6k SW with it. The 5000 series with 30# braid is the all around ticket though.
  7. I have both and prefer the Avet. It's an all around better reel. The Saltist is heavier in comparison but smoother and holds more line but not as durable. I had to replace the star drag and the main drive shaft on a couple of Saltists in the past. A closer size comparison is the Saltist 20h - still I like the Avet though. Step up to the Saltiga 30 and I like the Daiwa over the Avet. Avets are an excellent bang for the buck.
  8. Depends on what type of fishing you do and what's important to you. I have the Squall, Seagate, Sealine X, Saltist Sivler and the BG, Saltist Lever Drag 2 speed Lever, Saltist Hyperspeed Lever and the Saltiga Hyperspeed Lever in 20 and 30 sizes. Love them all, depends on what I'm doing at the time and what rod I"m coupling it with. The Squall with the mag is a no brainer distance caster - the rest of them are static magged but interchangable as far as mag size goes. Depends on what I'm planning to do with it and where I'm fishing. If you want distance and don't want the hassle of magging your reels, stick with the Squall or the Abu/Akios reels that have built in mags. Don't get me started on the Abu's and Akios.
  9. For that rod I'd go with the 8000 if you plan to use it only for dunking. It's not like you're going to be working the rod. You may be able to step up to 65 lb. braid too. Might come in handy on big stuff like rays or sharks. That setup is common in Hawaii for GTs.
  10. Thanks for the input guys. I was planning to only use it to target small fish in the 1/2 to 3 lb. range with squid or sand fleas.
  11. Does anyone have experience with this rod or something similar? I'm planning to pair it with a 4000 sized Shimano for light surf fishing. Is this a good rod for this type of fishing? Advice appreciated. Thanks.
  12. I know Lami makes a rod for GT's... maybe only sold here in Hawaii? Not sure but it's pretty short so I think it'll lack the distance. From shore, if you're willing to spend the cash, go with a CTS S8. Maybe the 11'6" 1-3 oz. (which is waaay underrated - it can throw up to 5 oz.) or the 12' 2-4 oz. which many use for Roosterfish. An 8k Shimano and 50# braid is minimal IMO - you are pushing it with 30# if there's any structure whatsoever. Lookup HPD (HighPlainsDrifter) on this forum - he knows how to handle some mean fish from shore. I've only caught the small ones. If you're gonna battle GT's, you need to pack a punch for the big ones. Not sure if spinning gear will do it for the 100#+ bigguns out there.
  13. Above offer retracted. Looking into something else.
