  • What I do for a living:
    Retired
  1. I hate to think of how much money I have spent on guides over the last few decades. The best are those that would also take on the roll as a tutor, and not just a guide. They are the ones that not only instructed me what to do, but why I was doing it. Well worth every penny spent.
  2. I have come to like their interline series of rods. I have no experience with their surf models, but have 7 of them in shorter versions. My 8' 6" interline has well over 4,000 casts targeting salmon in local rivers and is a joy to use. I like not having the guides for the line to get tangled on. I have been very close to buying the SA-BS 40-4051 but $400 is a big chunk of my fishing gear budget. If you do choose to pick one up and like it ... PLEASE don't let me know ... I am afraid that is all it would take to cause me to click on that "Buy Now" button.
  3. If you pick up the Daiwa "Interline" Ballistic I am afraid I will have to hate you out of envy. I have several of their older interline rods and have become a fan. I have read great reviews of the new Ballistic Surf series.
  4. I was channel surfing several weeks ago and came across a fishing show where they were catching huge Tigerfish... Talk about some lure damage !!! The host of the show said they were on par with any other fish in regards to how they fight. Just not many know about them because of the remote rivers they are found in. I think they get even bigger than shown in that photo.
  5. Very interesting in reading everyones responses... When I first saw the video, I thought how I would loved to have been in the store to stop the kids from leaving. The 46 year old father side of me had the instant reaction of "Those Idiots" I then started pondering some of the pranks I did as a kid, the more I let my self go back to how I thought when I was their age, the less anger I felt about what they did. Approval towards those actions ... heck no. Should there be some kind of punishment ... heck yes. As far as anyone thinking these kids deserve a pat on the back for originality, having guts and hoping their own kids would do as such .... I only hope your lacking chromosome doesn't get passed down genetically.
  6. In the Puget Sound "Pacific NW" many have claimed they have been spooled while fishing some of the straights. Not only did something grab their line, but downriggers also. They state that what ever grabbed their line just continued on at a steady pace as if it didn't even know it was hooked. Some will remind you that there is a naval submarine base in the area and they pass right through there. This would explain why a 200 lb downrigger cable was snapped as if it was nothing. Personally .... I say it is Nessie
  7. Yes we all did stupid pranks as kids, but todays kids have the incentive of making a video of it and seeing how many YouTube hits they can get. Kids do things to get attention and now they can have a worldwide audience.
  8. I had a pair of Hodgman Wadelite's which are same design as yours "but not as nice" that I had leaking along a seam. I got some GE Silicon II caulking and wiped a thin layer over the seam on the inside by turning them inside-out. You could not see the repair at all from the outside and no flexibility lost in the material. They lasted several additional seasons standing in rivers each weekend. You can find it at most any hardware store and has many other uses around the house.
  9. Dumbest was from a fair sized marlin that made a 300 yard run when the captain decided turn the boat. Engine stalled leaving the current pushing us one way and the fish going the other. The remaining 200 yards of line was painful to just sit there and see go. Bank fishing on the Columbia can cost you several reels worth of line when you get into the oversize. Just their bulk being pushed by the current alone can break 40 lb line before they even decide to kick their motor into gear. You soon learn to use slightly lighter line to the hook to save loosing a reels worth of spectra. Worst was fishing in a bay up in Alaska from a row boat. Getting the net out for a 35-40 lb king I had fought for 15 minutes when a salmon shark decided he wanted it more. As the 15 lb line was screaming off of my reel, I was yelling at my friend to "Row Faster, Row Faster !!!" trying to keep up with the shark. It was like bringing verbal insults to a gun fight.
  10. We have a huge shad run up here in the Pacific NW. 20 fish per hour is not uncommon. Since they are also American Shad, I would think tackle and tactics would be much the same for down there. From the boat, you can use very light gear in the 4-6 lb line area. Very small spoons like Dick Nites are often used. From the banks, Darts are the standard with some also tossing a couple small beads or small spoons. The smallest darts seem to work best no larger than 1/16th oz. Because of the light weight, longer light action rods can toss them better. You can add a small amount of weight up ahead of the dart for better casting and to get down where the fish are "granted this is all regarding fishing in the larger rivers like the Columbia. On stretches of the bank that are congested with other anglers, it is best to use a bit heavier gear, perhaps 8-10 lb line. Since those fishing next to you will hold off on casting while your fighting your fish, you don't want to take too long pulling it in with ultra light gear .... not if you want to keep piece with the neighbors. If your asking regarding fishing for them in salt water, please ignore all the above as I have never tried for them outside of fresh.
  11. Does anyone else also get the lighter out and slightly burn the end. I know it was something of a standard when conventional Dacron was used. I do so to the point that a small ball boils up which, when cooled, will not slip through the knot.
  12. Same here .... Fishing for me is "Guy Time" away from the wife or girlfriend ... or both I am on the north left side of the country, so majority of my fishing has me in waders, standing in a river just below natures "Damn that is too cold" point, thinking about nothing, not a worry in the world...... that is unless I take a step and the water suddenly gets deeper .... then I think "Damn that is too cold"
  13. I hope to stop laughing before I have to be at work tomorrow... I just picture you yelling at your dog saying: "I said Duck ... ... with a D !!!"
  14. I see Cabelas carries a couple of products designed to be applied to line to improve casting and such. Has anyone tried these? I had thought of applying a couple sprays of silicon that I use in my work to allow wires to be pulled over and along other wires very easily. Thanks p.s. I did think to do a SEARCH first. LINE came up with more threads than I could count CONDITIONER not useful since I don't have "Problem Hair" TREATMENTS resulted in a few discussing their Psychological Counseling experiences LUBE brought up several threads on reel maintenance and some photos that may require I get TREATMENTS to get out of my head
