  1. I just picked up an Avid AS4000SW from LL Bean. I know, I know...Bean 'aint what it used to be so I had some reservation but for the price this thing was a must try. Built solidly, very smooth, drag seems fine. What's there not to like? Has anyone used one of these? I won't be dunking it and wanted something to match my 7' St Croix Tidemaster MH.
  2. Still have the Tidemaster? What is shipping to MA looking like?

I thought this was going to be a handgun thread!
  4. I picked up a BB Curve about 2 months ago and love it. Perfect if your business (or your personal life too, I guess) revolves around email. The device doesn't have the best web browser and you should definitely look into a memory card for the thing if you are going to keep any data on there. When you buy in you need phone service and a data plan on top of that. No data plan, no internet/email.
  5. Any prior problems with the ferrules loosening? I have a 9wt RPLXi that I but damn if that thing doesn't loosen up on me. Fortunately it hasn't happened when I have been in to fish, but during a long day of blind casting I have to keep checking the sections. On more than a few times I have casted the tip out and had to pull the mess in and reassemble - embarassing to say the least!
  6. I know this sounds like an obvious miss, but try cranking down on the star drag a bit.
  7. I have two Tetons that I use as my go-to reels. Never had a problem with them as they are super simple. As for customer service, I upgraded the reel handle from plastic to wood and bought these parts direct from Teton. From the way they answered the phone and took the time to chat I can tell it's a small place, and is often the case with small places, they are very good on the phone. Go for the Teton!
  8. Yes, the last shot of orange is a warning sign that I am getting low. My Tibors only hold 250 of backing and I want to know when I have to start putting pressure on fish. I do my blind splices myself and knock wood, so far so good. No glue or other special prep, but I do make sure there is 4" or so on each side of the splice to make sure there is enough grab. These things are super strong although you would never guess by looking at the mechanics of them.
  9. Backing capacity is normally listed as one of the qualities of the reel. My Tibor on the other hand, has a groove to show when you have topped off with so much braided dacron. Once I know my backing capacity I prefer to have 50 yards of orange with 200 (or the balance) in either charteruse or white mated with a blind splice.
  10. Thanks Jimmy! So if I can get the 6500C3 for $50, what is the extra $50 to buy a 6500TC? Durability?
  11. Yeah, I know the outside is different, but what is different on the inside? Is there a huge amount of adjustability between the two models? Capability? Strength?
  12. I did a search and didn't find a direct answer, but I am looking at a new reel for next season. I currently fish a 5600C4 from a boat or kayak but am looking for something with more capacity. I love the style of the C4 and also enjoy the thumbar, but per the suggestions of Surf Talk I'm going to opt for the push button for my next reel. Basically, what is the real difference between the 6500C4 and 6500TC besides style and the location of the spool brake? I found a 6500C3 on sale for $50, a 6500CL Rocket for $60 but the 6500TC/CS/Etc are all between $150 and $200. For an extra $100 - $150 there must be SoMeThInG besides style.
  13. I have a pair of lower end Donmar's and love them. Great quality, made in the good 'ol USA and does a decent job on Braid. Best tool for cutting braid is scissors...sorry. Want a way to get around both problems? Leatherman Wave. Stainless, made in USA, and has enough tools to pull apart an Abu and has scissors for the times when you need to cut braid in one snip.
  14. Which Bean waders were these? I just returned my third pair of LL Bean Bomber waders for leaky neoprene feet...I'm hoping the newest pair, now made in China, is better than the previous made in USA waders that besides the leaks fit very well.
