1. Can anyone give me suggestions on what type of late fall / winter flies I could be using here in the north east?
2. Read that article a while ago. good read... Gonna tie up your recipe for the muddler tonight. I'm also gonna tie some zebra midges. Was also told to try Blood bead... Headed down in the AM rain or shine.....
3. Been doing some late fall early winter fly fishing on the Mousam river below the dam in Kennebunk (tidal water) for Browns with very little success, I watched a few guys catching them every other cast... I threw probably 20 different flies/nymphs at them. Any recommendations on what I should try.... or if you've had success on the Mousam please PM me....
4. Holy Moly Starship... Nice fish.... and nice Hat.lol.. BTW who gave you permission to fish off of my rock? I've caught many many fish there. Caught my first steelhead there back in the late 80's.. Hopefully the wife will let me join in the frost bite regatta this year... She's getting laid off from the Mill and going to Law school... so I don't think it will take much convincing... My oldest boy and I went trolling out on Sebago lake yesterday but got the skunk... We did spend 4 days on the salmon river again Halloween week and did pretty well catching chromers.. I am Gonna spend a week Trolling your big Puddle this July, Maybe we can hook up.. HarlyCarly you in?
5. My lady and I finally hit the salt this weekend after a 3year hiatus. (yeah that's right 3 years) fished one of my favorite spots in the camp Ellis area. Had something taking my blood worm.. Would run with it a few feet and drop it. This went on for about 20minutes So I decided to cast out a little further. (thought maybe it was a crab) so my GF comes over and casts in the same spot I had getting the bites. She messed around for a few minutes and finally hooked what was biting.... A flounder. About a 16 incher... On a 3/0 hook no doubt.
6. Welcome to the site Fellas...... Lots of good info here...... Enjoy and tight lines..
7. Had one jump into the boat on the Kennebec. The same year a Warden was loading his boat and I noticed his windsheild was broke.. He said a sturgeon had jumped up and broke it..He had about a 4 footer in the boat. said he was bringing it to the Biologist...
8. Wow.. Heather and I have been to the Salmon river in NY twice. You would not believe the crap left behind. The guide we went with said they have a clean up every spring to pick up the 10 or so miles of River. Every year they fill 2... Thats TWO! dump trucks filled with trash left behind from the Salmon and Steelhead runs.... They also recycle line thats left behind.. Last year alone they filled the back of a pick up truck. AND then guys bitch that property owners are starting to charge to fish from the banks.. I dont blame the land owners....
9. wish I woulda seen this earlier. are there any charter spots left or were they all auctioned off.
10. Been prepping the boat for the past couple weeks and I cant wait to take her out. My question is this.. Is there an inshore area where I can catch ground fish.. Pollock cod or flounder at this time of year.. without venturing 20 miles off shore? No spot burning so no need to post here so feel free to PM me.. My boat is very seaworthy, 21 foot Proline Center console....
11. To clarify spot burn...... Popham beach is a good place to fish. Is not a spot burn...... Popham beach is about 5 miles long with several places to fish. Now if I said go to Popham beach and fish by the pilings on the north side about 25 yards out... Now that's a spot burn...
12. Me and my lady took a second trip to the Salmon River in Pulaski this week. 3/17 to 3/20 (BTW the i at the end of Pulaski is actually pronounced "eye" not "ee") Water levels were low and was very hard fishing.... I won a float trip last November and finally got a chance to go... 8 hour drive really wasn't that bad. If you search around you can find hotels running specials,, We got a room at the Port Lodge Hotel for $150 for 3 nights... The first day we arrived around 11 am. we couldn't check in to the room until after 3 so figured we could get some fishing in...got on the river and tossed some egg sacks to no avail. Second day we had the float trip planned for 530 am.. Got on the float boat around 6. floated down to the first spot around 630. (just like hunting cant fish til half hour before and after) around 7 we started fishing.... just to find out we had been fishing for 7 days using the wrong technique... (we went last November for 5 days never caught a fish). The guide was awesome.Mike Deyo of Dirty Bills Guide Service (a whole different story of how he got the name Dirty Bill for his guide Service).. after about half hour of fishing Heather hooked up to a nice fatty... her first ever Steelhead AND the largest fish she's ever landed.. Fishing was difficult because of the low water levels. (water is controlled by Brookfield Power and they closed the gates the night before) we had several hook ups but never landed another fish the rest of the day. That night when we got done the guide said he didn't have any clients the next day and asked me to go fishing with him up to the Upper Fly fishing only Zone .The whole UFZ is catch and release.Found out that Brookfield was opening the gates to allow the water levels to rise at 9pm. with the water levels rising it triggers the Steelies to spawn and feed.. awesome news.......So.. The next morning we head up to the Upper fly Zone at 5 am.. yes 5 am. cant fish til 7..chatted with mike about fishing and life in general for 2 hours while we waited for the sun to rise.. Got to know about the Guide Mike Deyo and the person Mike Deyo.. he wanted to make sure we got a good spot. When we got there we only saw a hand full of guys.. Unlike the lower General law area where guys are stacked up like cord wood on the banks, and like a UFC ring , the UFZ is more gentlemanly like. When you get a fish on you holler "fish on" and guys get out of the way and they actually help you land it.. Anyway I bought a new 8 weight fly rod at Beans special for the trip... Third cast. Tip comes off... Not broke it just comes off and slides down the line and gone.... I WAS PISSED!!!. Luckily I brought my 6 weight Sage as a back up... Back in business..... through out the next few hours (after 7 am of course) I landed 7 fish but hooked up to about 20... One thing about Steelies when they want to go they go you cant turn them. I have caught just about everything that swims in Maine waters and nothing can compare to the fight of a Steelhead; I am addicted... I am already planning another trip next November.. I might even make it a yearly event. I AM headed up in July to troll Lake Ontario for giant kings with my NEW Center console for a week with Mike...
