  • What I do for a living:
    Slumlord
  1. Francis,Brady, Thill, Ty, Brandon & Others: Why is this board so dead ? It was hoppin' as the "Chesapeake Anglers" board, where I was the "mike taylor guy from wv". I gotta respond to my own posts... for goodness sake doesn't anyone fish anymore ?
  2. OK, if you had your choice to throw out your minnow net, would you throw it under the Pax river bridge in Upper Marlboro, or Rockhold creek ?
  3. The hills are looking too large to me so I am heading out on the Chesapeake to slay some aquatic delicasies for the table but where, oh where would I find a rack of bait for a day trip thereabouts ? Especially either late afternoon or early morning... since this will be a road trip.
  4. Nah, I can't say nothing about fishing for "strippers", but you da man, Big Rad the tide change (That would be high tide), especially close to sundown and before midnite is the ticket. If ya got yer line in the water, and got anything presentable that they'll eat, yer gonna catch fish. Except if ya get skunked which happens occasionally... Go for it., dude and enjoy.
  5. Brady you are nothing if not an optomist. Your post reminds me of my post on the Chesapeake Angler boards "The best Chum I ever knew".
  6. A long time ago I stopped keeping the big ones (as in I release 'em) and started keeping the pan sized ones which are a lot more plentiful anyway. It just seemed the right thing to do. So ya did good, guys ! Great fish !
  7. Launch Tubes. Any game management agency and many wildlife management organizations have launch tubes for the purpose of netting game for wildlife management purposes. I suggest trying to contact one of them to see where they are retailed. Also the yachting fraternity uses these ("Launching a monkey fist")to throw lines long distances to disabled vessels is rough weather some are pneumatic and others are powder charged. It would be relatively simple to rig up one of these devices to throw a line 150 yards.
  8. John O': I have living witnesses. Snail mail Jack Webb;5234 Iverchapel Rd.; Springfield VA 22151. I'd post his e-mail address, but who needs the spam ? "Lucy in the sky with diamonds......"
  9. Anyway since the thread is a bluefish cooking one I guess I should be more specific than just "burning them". This is not my recipe but basically is how I've always done them (break out da smoker). They're gonna be better if U caught 'em 'cause U can bleed 'em (like it says) but the beauty of this recipe is that if ya got 'em at the market the brining is gonna cover da tracks so to speak...: Smoked Fish This recipe will work with Mackerel, Bluefish, Salmon, and even Cod. If you catch the fish yourself, cut through their throat to bleed them while they're still alive. Put them head down in a bucket so they'll pump out as much blood as possible. Wash and chill the whole fish until you can fillet them. Early in the morning of the day you're going to smoke wash 4 to 6 fillets and place them in a brine made from: 1 quart cold water 1/3 cup Kosher salt 1/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon black, red or other peppers (spices) to taste Mix this together in a glass or enamel bowl add the fish and submerge the fillets with a weight to hold them under the brine. Brine the fillets in the refrigerator from 2 to 4 hours (longer makes the fish saltier). Remove the fillets and wipe dry with paper towels. Place them, skin side down, on several thickness of dry paper towels and let them air dry for several hours. The surface is dry enough when your finger sticks to the flesh. Hot smoke over a 250 degree wood fire for about 2 hours or until the fillets are firm to the touch (like medium rare steak). Peel off the skin and enjoy.
  10. Well, there was the women's feminine protection object in the 5LB catfish's mouth north of the Blue Plains Sewage treatment plant near Washington D.C., but the strangest thing I ever saw was the one that didn't get caught, was the 5-6' Alligator Gar that I personally witnessed off of the old ferry pier from Virginia into Washington D.C. that no longer exists. The fish appeared out of nowhere, and though supposedly extinct showed every attribute that a probably 60-90LB fish from the Pliestocene era would exhibit, from the bulbous nose, to the snaggle teeth, to the diamond plate armour scales, to the fearless attitude it had. We were fishing for Bass, quickly switched to Snag hooks, but no luck, they just slipped off of it's back, nose, and whereever else you drew them over the fish. Then it submerged like a submarine blowing ballast. Popular press has the "Snakehead" as the top of the predator list in the Potomac. I beg to differ.
  11. I got blues in the fridge. They're great on the grill a lot of ways & I'm gonna burn 'em tomorrow !
  12. I don't know about July, but in August we chase the "W-Fish"!
  13. The last 4 1/2 years I've been busy with being Mr. Mom to a now 2 1/2 & 4 1/2 year olds. The father got Alzheimers, then a brain tumor and I am the caretaker. Tell me about it. Tomorrow I went bent and am taking the kids out across the West river from Shadyside in the blowboat, with help from friends to take care of the kids. I'm gonna put out a line on the way across, wish me luck !
