  1. Thanks for the info. I am looking forward to getting down to the beach and wet a few lines. I have spent most of the year fishing the Chesapeake but I really like ocean fishing better. I'll try the spots you suggested, at least now I have some options. Thanks again for the suggestions. Max
  2. I need some advice. I'm planning a trip to OC in two weeks and would like to do some surffishing. I don't have an ORV so I'm looking for beach areas that I can walk. Has anyone heard reports from the north part of AI above the ORV area (fed or state area)? I read about the blues blitz hitting up along the OC beach and was hoping that they would still be around. I was also considering the inlet if the fishing was still good up there. Any suggestions where someone without an ORV could do some surffishing (maybe even with a fly rod) would be appreciated. Max
  3. Capt. Brady: I am becoming a big fan of light tackle fishing (LTF). I have been using a 6.5 ft spinning rod off the rocks at Sandy Point. I get good hits from white perch with spinner bait and small stripers and blues with metal. I am going to start using my 8.5 spinning rod to find some keepers (I hope) close to the bridge pilings. Any suggestions on either good places for shore based LTF or tackle that seems to work best for larger strippers and blues. Thanks, Max
  4. I just wanted to say a big THANKS to all of you. I posted a question a few weeks ago about a new surf rod and got a lot of really great information and insight. I learned a lot in the dialogue. The first thing I learned was that one rod will not do. The second thing I learned is that I needed to quit thinking and start fishing. So, I ordered the 8'6" Lami and I was able to go to OC with it last week. It casts like a dream and is light enough to fish all day. I went out to the jetty with it ... boy was that an experience!!! I got a lot to learn to fish that structure. I found my way over to the little public beach in West OC. Had some fun there. Caught two small fish (9" croaker and a very small sheepshead). The operative word there was caught! The new rod works. Thanks again, you guy are great. BTW, I am already starting to look for my second rod, probably a 10 footer for this fall. Max
  5. Hey Big Rad: I was in a dentist chair this afternoon and did not see your post untill to late. I will be checking out that area later this week and next week, and hope to see you in the near future. I was also thinking about fishing in the early AM. Is that a good time for catching fish at SPSP? Max PS I also saw your PM, thanks.
  6. KenY ... this is great, thanks for the information. I'm going to try the shore approach with jigs, bucktails and the like. How much boat traffic do you get there? Casting across the channel with a lot of traffic seems risky. Max
  7. I'm just getting into fishing and could use some help. I want to fish Sandy Point SP and would like to know the common rigs used for strippers and anything else that may be around. I am using an 8.5' spinning surf rod (will also be going to OC area). I will start this month and fish as much as possible year round so I understand that preferred rigs will change with the season. I guess I'm looking for some of the basics such as hook type/size, lure types, rig configuration and bait types. I would also like opinions (I know there are many) regarding lures vs. jigs vs. bait during Aug and Sept. There are probably more questions that I don't know to ask so any references I can go to are welcome. This may be a bit much for a forum post but any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Max
  8. Hey Allen thanks for the reminder; my real objective is to have some fun. Based on the comments and following Poppy's suggestion, I looked at Lamiglas again. They have an 8'6" M rod, XS86MS (5/8-2 oz lures) and a 9' MH rod, XS9MHS (1-3 oz lures). I understand the difference in 6" of height, and I understand that the 9' can toss a slightly heaver lure and sinker. What I'm not sure about is the relative difference between Medium (M) and Medium Heavy (MH). I know that it refers to the concept of power and how much power it takes to bend the rod, but for the kind of fishing you guys are talking about from the jetty or light "summer" surf fishing, is one of these rods better than the other? As you guys have convinced me, I will also be getting either a 10' or 11' heftier rod (for bigger surf and fish) to go along with this one. How much "stiffer" is the MH compared to the M or is it more a question of the ability to throw an extra oz of weight? Max
  9. Ok, so I need two rods, that's not a problem. What would be your recommendations? Max
  10. OK, so here is my next question. Based on the size lures used in this area, it seems that I could use a 9' rod just as well as a 10'. Except for throwing heavier lead and bait in the fall, what would be the advantage of the 10' vs 9'? For bait fishing, how heavy are the weights that are being tossed in July and August? Max
  11. Hay Guys ... Thanks for the welcome and the great advice. I looked at a lot of your threads and consider this forum a wealth of information. When I talked to folks they all said they used lami for their custom rods, so I figured why not use the same blank. My original choice for a rod was the St. Croix 10' Premier surf rod (PSRS100M2) any thoughts on this one? What are the lures (weights and types) that are used most around the area? Max
  12. I have decided to start surf fishing and could use some advice. I am going for spinning gear and will fish AI, OC and the Inlet. I will want to be able to use either lures or bait and want to go after some of the big ones (stripers, blues but really anything that is there). My first question is what are the weights for lures and sinkers that are used along the coast (I'm assuming this makes a difference on the rod selection)? I have narrowed my search of rods down to lamiglas, either the XS10MS or the XS10MHS. My second question, do you have any recommendations between these two rods for the fishing that is done around AI and OC? I plan to use the gear most of the year. Let me also add that this is my first and (for now) my only rod. Thanks in advance, any thoughts would be appreciated.
