  1. I send mine to Anthony Chinni in NJ he does great work basic reel service is $29/reel plus any parts... just got mine back and they're buttery-smooth (again) google Wood-ridge reels and you should be able to find him. turn around can take a while depending on how busy he gets, so leave yourself some lead time PM me if ya need more info
  2. Navionics makes the best fishfinders IMHO- the clarity is unsurpassed and down- and sidescan. Im not a fan of livescope- but then again, I dont go fishing to "fill my limit"....I'm in it for the enjoyment I get from trying to catch fish.
  3. fingers crossed this make a tangible difference in the fish's ability to spawn
  4. this is a little controversial in freshwater fishing- lots of guys mock the livescopers- saying they cant catch fish without a finder telling them where the fish are (EXACTLY) as they fish. but it is NOT going away, ever. I predict it'll eventually make freshwater bass so hard to catch in the big lakes that most people will give up Whether or not it catches on for stripers in the salt is yet to be seen- I hope it doesn't
  5. Just buy some real rain gear and be done with it. get some GRUNDENS- it comes in all varieties from commercial PVC to high-end Goretex to decent moderately priced stuff in the “Gage” line (that’s what I use). Sign up to their website and get notified of sales
  6. Buds Fish Market in Branford is good
  7. I was 1 of the guys to go on record from the rec community- the charter boat capts are ALL on a first name basis with the DEEP guys, so understand they will have their voices heard if we dont speak up as stated- PLEASE take the time to email your thoughts to comments @ asmfc.org CC the 3 state reps on the commission also Justin Davis DEEP Fisheries William Hyatt- DEEP Natural Resources Chief Craig Miner- State Rep (proxy) (he was silent in the back corner)
  8. want to bring this back up to the top- CT meeting was full of charter captains complaining they were screwed this year by the Emergency Action and reduced slot size. one guy said he was down $20K as a direct result- most were angry and trying to intimidate anyone who had a different opinion of how things should be managed.... one guy slammed the table screamed a few times that he was the only one in the room who worked hard for a living. point is- these are the guys who SHOW UP to meetings and try to get attention for their point of view you can email comments to comments @ asmfc.org but showing up and speaking your mind has VALUE and shows the local managers that regular folks care about the fishery get OFF your ASS and go to a meeting
  9. I have never heard of any problems with crabs and vibrio.... but don't count me as the definitive answer. I'm not a crab guy at all
  10. I'm the chairman of the Guilford municipal shell fishing program- I spoke to the state Burau of Aquaculture specifically when this story hit last week. I also work in the Yale ER on the shoreline and we see wounds form shellfishing all the time. Vibrio occurs naturally and is more prevalent in warmer months. Best thing you can do is ICE your catch immediately after digging. wounds should be cleaned thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical attention if you feel the site is getting infected Recently we had a couple on vacation from PA who caught tons of clams- the woman fell going back to the car and she developed skin infections that required antibiotics. her husband happily ate the clams without any problem. also- do not "soak" you clams in a bucket of water to try and eliminate sand/sediment- just wash under running water with a brush. it is possible for one "hot" calm to contaminate your entire catch if you soak them together in the same bucket for a long period of time. cooking typically eliminates any bacterial problems when eating calms/oysters.... avoid eating raw shellfish in hot weather months
  11. winter fishing since february has been pretty terrible from a boat too....
  12. they've been going for a week now in town..... warm nights are better
  13. it HAS been a while since I saw anything for you..... and yeah, this place has changed. most of the old crowd has moved on, and new guys moved in- and lots of gear talk for sure. plus the fishing has gone down hill a lot in the last 10 years or so...... last Fall was the best we've seen in a decade or more
