Guidance for seeing and photographing northern lights
Bonefish79 replied to albacized's topic in The Town Tavern
We were in Tromso, Norway a few years ago in the winter, 220 miles above the Arctic Circle, did a northern lights tour and ended up in Finland before we actually saw any, and they were faint. Not ideal, but it turns out a camera does a better job of seeing them than the human eye when they're faint. The photos turned out pretty good. -

Sometimes you just get lucky with a new guy, though. My buddy and I walked into Bud N' Mary's one morning in 1974, only one guy in there and we asked if there were any guides available for the afternoon. He said, "Sure, I'll take you". Rick Ruoff. Not a bad way to get introduced to Keys flats fishing.

I just picked up a spare, Aventik Mini 12', on Amazon for about $60, works like a charm.

Yup, 1495 1/2 or 1498. The 95 1/2 was my go-to back in the 70's in the Keys, bones, cuda, snook, small tarpon all no problem, and burned finger tips are just something ya gotta get over.

I've got a couple of their glass fly rods, love 'em. Quality is first rate. I don't think you can go wrong with anything from Gary Loomis, and they often go on sale.

I spent a bunch of years a bit further south. The beach area on the Big Talbot Island side of Nassau Sound can be a fun place to wade, and the marshes on the inland side have reds and trout, but there you're gonna need a kayak at the least. Head south and cross the Nassau Sound bridge and look for the first park entrance on the left hand side, you can access a mile or so of beach from there, we call it the Dead Tree Beach, you'll see why.

Did it once as a youngster in Florida, and I should have known something was up when my buddies cousin handed me a .410 for the hunt.

The south (or west) side of Duck has some pretty flats, we used to get bones in there, and the potholes on the ocean side of the highway bridge have been known to hold permit. The whole stretch along Grassy Key (both sides) is a fun place for barracuda. RAW's suggestion of Islamorada to Long Key is a good one, and the Highway Flat is fun to wade.

1495 1/2 was my bonefish reel for a bunch of years and it's still my schoolie striper reel (on a Fenwick FF856 glass rod). Bulletproof reels with a bit of care.

I've had this one for about 10 years, came with a fishing package option with a couple of Scotty rod holders (the plug for second one is behind the cooler). I added the cooler seat, the paddle just slips under the bungees up front, capacity is about 320 lbs so it's a tank. I use mine mostly for floating the smallmouth rivers down here.

I had a wonderful conversation with your DH late one evening at an Indian River Inlet gathering of SOL folks and he seemed quite in awe of your collection.

CFO III (the upside down CFO), but I've got a couple of 70's era 1494 1/2 Medalists that are smooth as silk and pure pleasure to fish.

My cousin just picked this up, 1970 C10, 350 automatic, disc brakes all around, fun driver. He sold a '66 Bel Air w/ 427 4spd.
