I'm lacking in the space and tool department so i did the best i could. Made many mistakes. destroyed the tail wrap on my first one. I did two loops instead of one..duh but i figure i'd keep it like that as a reminder.. any ways i dont have space for a lathe just yet so i a rough shaped them with a carving knife and got it down a little better with a dremel. then i tried to smooth the shape out best i could hand sanding.. I need to make a dryer for the epoxy process. Anyways it was both a pain and fun at the same time if that makes sense.  The first is the purple over silver and the black is my 2nd1869488

drilling the hole for the eye destroyed the wood. you can see around it..

I've thought about that. I may try a few out.

The thread by the Greek on handcarves might help you, I suggest you search for it. If those plugs are weighted even close to properly, you will probably catch fish with them, and become addicted to this whole hobby. They look good for first attempts.

 some suggestions that helped me:

If there are gouges, or if when drilling some wood chips off, you can fill the voids with epoxy. Bondo (for autobody work) works great, and plumber's putty works good (but is easier to use).

If you put the plugs in a sturdy vice, long strips of sandpaper, dragged across in a sawing motion, will get you a smooth surface. Labor intensive, but if you rotate  the plug you can get a smooth symmetrical surface.

Best of luck, and hope to see pix with fish attached

you have it shaped right looks like you need to do more smoothing with some sandpaper.

I get it down with 80 grit by hand but, before that I roll the blank through my fingers to find the high spots then mark them with a sharpie and work them with the 80 till they are gone.final smoothing is done with 200 grit.

your shape is good just needs to be smoother[the second pic].

you are indeed on your way, take your time, smooth it well and go slow, don't rush.

you can get it done and well at that!
