PeterJ
The wife and I are looking to get a stand mixer. Thinking the Kitchen Aide 5qt title head model. I think it's the Artisan. Anybody out the with one or another model? What do you like what do you dislike, what would you buy today? Thanks in advance. --Pete
PeterO
Excellent choice! We have had one for over 20 years and it still performs like a champ. The tilt head is fine for our needs and it gets a lot of use, the bigger model is really not necessary. My wife makes cookies that have a very heavy batter and it's a real work saver. I use the meat grinder attachment a lot and it does a great job. Would buy another in an instant if it failed, but will more likely be handing this one down. :th: "My mind is aglow with whirling, transient nodes of thought careening through a cosmic vapor of invention."Hedley Lamar"It wasn't the bullet that laid him to rest, was the low spark of high-heeled boys"Jim Capaldi & Steve Winwood
JimW
I have one of the slightly bigger models, lever lift bowm, also for about 20 years. Haven't looked at what the competition is making now and probably won't have to for another 20. Meat grinder gets a lot of use, pasta roller less used but not because it doesn't work well. I thought I would use the dough hook more for bread but just don't knead dough any more, at least not like 20 years ago. My SIL is a pro baker/food writer and has a few of these including a monster 7 qt but the tilt head is what she uses. DiverDux
It doesn't matter which one you buy. The quality is consistent across all of the models. Great machines!
PeterJ
I think we knew we'd get positive statements, but it's nice to hear the confirmations. Thanks --Pete
Mike
Does the wattage matter? I see these from 300 to 600 or more watts power. "Depend not on fortune, but on conduct."
ted527
More wattage would mean a stronger motor, less likely to stall under a heavy load
Billy77
Costco had the 7 qt. Pro model on sale a few months ago. Was the best deal anywhere and even beat out Bed Bath and Beyond with the coupon. Why get a smaller one when you can go larger for less money? MAy not need the power all the time but if you do it is there:p Just a thought... Was well under $300 Google it to see price...and good luck Support Gun Control...Placing the 2nd bullet into the hole of the first!!!
JimW
I think the only downside is weight. My wife probably wouldn't use it if she had to lift it to the counter. jerseyhunter
Once it's on the counter it will be used often. Got our Kitchen Aid around 97 and it says Heavy Duty, only 325 watts only bogged down once or twice while using the grinding attachment or making a real heavy dough, my fault. Now I have a dedicated grinder and only use the KA for 5lbs or less. I kept my slicer down stairs and was seldom used. Now it sits on the counter and I use it for everything from slicing meat to onions and tomatoes for sandwiches.
NS Mike D
True story: Got mine via the bridal shower back in 92. In an attempt to keep it on display on the counter, I had explained that it did everything. Months later I see her with this pineapple soup like mixture slopping around in the bowl. She was taking some sort of pie. I got the evil eye to leave her alone in the kitchen, so I take seat in the living room. I can't help myself and finally ask what the recipe directions said - she reluctantly reads : "Blend ..... " "Honey, you Blend in a Blender ....." wait a second "Well, you said it does EVERYTHING!" I use it 3 - 4 times a week nearly a quieter century later, still looks brand new (white enamel) and works like the first day was well "... let it go - lets move forward." I just got one as a Christmas present. It's cool having one, but honestly I have had to go out of my way to find things to use it for. I used it this past weekend to grind some meat for burgers. Probably will continue to do that. Other than that, I only seeing it being useful for making things that I shouldn't be eating anyway....i.e. cookies, cakes, dough, etc.
ahg
We bought an artisan from the outlet section of the kitchen aid website. It was basically brand new for just 180 as compared to 350 in most stores. There is a 6qt professional series for 300 on the website now, cant beat that. jerseybuddha
I love my kitchen aide. Wife uses it for baking. I put the grinder attachment on it. I usually do well over 100 pounds of venison through it a year without a hiccup.
