FSBLeadHead
Everyone, I am new to make jigs. So far I have poured banana head jigs and stand up jigs. I have powder coat paint in the following colors, black, white, red, yellow, orange, and chartreuse. I have white, red, and blue dyed bucktails. I have white, red, and blue thread. I have one bobbin. I have a set of pliers. Which molds seem to be most popular for saltwater fishing? Anyone have any pointers on things they might have learned from when they first started? What is the best way to put eyes on jigs?

What is the best way to put eyes on jigs? You're going to want a vise. Even a $10 cheap one will work better than vise grips, and honestly they're fine for bucktails. The Ultra Minnow, hot lips, and banana jigs are probably the 3 most popular. Your first 3-5 wraps MUST be TIGHT to keep the hair locked in. This means thicker thread than 210 denier flat waxed nylon that you find everywhere. Upholstery thread or size D rod tying thread are best. Doing this I have fished bucktails never using a drop of glue to see how they hold up and never lose hair except to tooty critters. You can paint eyes with a cheap set of drill bits. Dip the end in a little white acrylic paint, touch to the jig, let dry and do the black pupil with a smaller drill bit. Coat with epoxy or Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails clear nail polish. If you're using stick on eyes, just stick them and coat with epoxy or Hard as Nails. Hope this helps.
FSBLeadHead
HunterH, I just ordered the vise pictured below 2 days ago. Today I ordered a do-it banana head jig mold. Thank you for the tips on supplies and eye painting tips, it is very appreciated. Jaret
Jig Man
Jighead will depend on where you will be fishing. Deep current areas or shallow beach with little current. Bullet jigs, smiling bills, and flat head (narrow head, tall top to bottom) are the ones that I use most in saltwater.

I have a $150 vise and a $80 vise but I still break out my $10 one from a saltwater fly tying kit occasionally to tie 4/0-8/0 hooks. Learned the eye trick for crappie jigs. It'll work well. Just let it dry between dots. I usually do a big batch before I go to sleep and finish them the next day, let the pupil dry and then clear coat it. You could also use lacquer or vinyl or just about any kind of paint. You could even make a stencil and use an airbrush or spray paint if you needed them perfectly consistent for high volume selling or something. FSBLeadHead
I just picked up 2 shad dart molds, 2 banana head molds, and 2 hot lips molds for a great price. Now i need to start pouring some jigs since the weather has warmed up some.
FSBLeadHead
I have had quite a few problems with thread breaking while tying jigs. What brand and type of thread should I use and where can you buy it at?
