Gonna do anything different in 2015?

Not going to do anything different this year , just the same old way .

I will start with shallow running lures and work them at different speeds . Next I will be using medium depth running lures at different speeds , then on to the deeper lures at different speeds . From read and experimenting on the water I find it best to see where the fish are and what they want , at the  speed  needed to get a bite.

The fish are somewhere from the top to the bottom or in between . Finding where they are with proper speed  and depth should determine success . The action of a lure could be related to speed to a certain degree. The design of a lure should determine how deep it will go , depending on other choices such as lead trolling wire , an added sinker etc.

The style of the lure would determine what depth if the speed is not to fast . It could be a plastic worm or jig , a medium or deep diving plug or any of the choices out there .

The color of lures will probably be light colored ones in light conditions and darker colored lures in the darker times. This could be stained water or cloudy days , even nighttime falls in this condition .

I start out fishing not knowing at what depth fish are or what action or speed of lure they want . It is my goal to find where they are and how fast they will move to feed . Many conditions like fronts , clouds , rain , the waves of the water to diffuse the sunlight , the speed of the current fished in and other things also.

Starting out thinking the fish are either shallow or deep or somewhere between the two with an open mind of adjusting my lure speed using a color that works best with the conditions around me will be  the biggest points for me to keep in mind so my catch will be a good catch .

Things like structure , ie - drops , water temp changes , color of the water or any change around the fish  which leads a fish from the deep to the shallow water which might be a signal of feeding stages will be my guide ....... but this only touches the subject .

It starts out as a hunting trip for me every time I go with the main objective to enjoy myself and try my best to put people with me on fish and to teach them why and how they caught fish if they want to know . , saying that I will fish the same this year too .

Good luck on your hunting trip

Last year I worked a lot on testing new lures, new fishing techniques, and fishing locations.

The goal is simple this year:

FISH MORE AND FISH MORE OFTEN!

I have also booked a cabin on the West Branch of the Delaware River for a week in June for our family fishing vacation and my wife and I are really looking forward to it.

Well for starters I'm going to try fly fishing for bass. Other than that I will try to step outside my comfort zone and fish a more variety of plastics. It's hard when fishing a private pond and to step away from what works. Maybe I should try fishing different waters to challenge myself with how to switch techniques to land some fish.

Well, I finally put together a serious musky set-up this winter.

An 8'6" Okuma EVx Musky rod rated from 4oz-16oz and paired the rod an Okuma Komodo 350 w/ a power handle and I spooled the reel with 130yds of 80lb braid.

At the same time, I also picked up some 4oz and 8oz swimbaits. I plan on picking up a couple more really large musky plugs and topwaters.

My plan is to fish, seriously, for musky using the big boy stuff and as water temps go up I am going to make sure that every night that I am out, I have this set-up with me as I want to consistantly begin catching flatheads, over 30in, on a lures this year.

I have tried lure techniques for flatheads sporatically, over the past 3 seasons, never seriously though and never with lures of the size I am planning too. This year is different. Bait rods will still be set-up, but my main focus is to work the swimbaits, large plugs, and topwaters until my arm falls off every night.

I am going to build some of my own wire leaders for this under taking using Malin 7x7 SS wire, crimps, 150lb dou lock snaps, and 100lb barrel swivels.

I am also going to make some more shark bite leaders for this summer's vacations.

I will have something to pass the time during the sub zero temps of this horrible/nightmarish winter.

Going to fish in line spinners (blue fox minnow spins) early before muck/pads/grass gets thick.

Switch to zoom flukes when stuff gets Thick.

Then back to spinners and rapalas when the weeds start to die back.

Going to carp fish this summer for the first time since I was a kid. 30 years ago we caught monsters.

While I like fishing alone, I also fish quite often with a bunch of different guys. I've come to realize that a few of them, while they are friends, are a sure guarantee for a half hearted outing. They'll not be prepared with the necessary clothing or gear for the task at hand, they'll not bring a lunch and then whine about being hungry until we have to leave, or want to leave for some place else before we even begin to sample what's available. You know what I'm talking about, you've probably met the type.

I'm not old but I'm getting there and feel the pressure to get the max out of the moment. I feel it's time to cull those guys out, friends or not, we're not fishing together in 2015!

Any time anyone mentions that they want to go fishing with me, I simply tell them were they can find me on the river.

If they really want to fish they will come, and if they want to go, they have their own ride.

Yep, some guys are fishers and some think they want to fish, but don't really get it.

Rules for fishing buds:

1. If you stand me up and don't call then you are out.

2. If you let me do all the prep work, don't help with snacks, bait, boat, and complain you are out.

3. If you are consistently late and unprepared you are out.

4. If you start whining after an hour or two you are out.

5. If you are moody, pessimistic, and generally a pain it the butt you are out.

I once had two young guys who begged me to take them fish for a year and I finally relented. I spent two hours preparing the tackle and boat, spent two hour getting live soft crabs and fresh squid for bait, drove them 2-1/2 hours down to my spot on the Chesapeake, paid for the hotel, gas, bait, loaded the boat and launched it, put them on the fish and a hot bite, and after an hour they started whining that they were done and wanted to go back to a sports bar and drink beer and play video games. I went back to the dock, drove them to the bar, and went back out fishing. Late the next morning I drove them home and never fished with them again. I did not get as much as a thank you. The two young dudes talked about the beer and the video games all the way home.

SOME FOLKS JUST DON'T GET IT!

I no longer try to convince them if they don't seem to have the affinity, energy, and capacity to be fishers, or for being a decent human being.

That being said good fishing buds are like gold and usually make great lifelong friends. When you lose one it is like losing a kindred spirit and a part of yourself.

I would like to see about upgrading my gear and refining my technique. I've had the idea in my mind for a while to upgrade the drag washers to carbon fiber, add some ball bearings to some reels, and replace my cork grips with carbon fiber ones. I usually just buy stock and go with it but I've noticed that I am starting to be particular to certain things/preferences.

I also need to start accepting some offers from friends and fellow anglers to boat fish. I've been a shore angler for... well forever essentially now that I think of it to the point where I still haven't even used my kayak to fish from. There are a lot of advantages to boat fishing and i need to get my boat legs.

Very true. Getting along with somebody for years within the confines/context of a boat with 4AM wake ups and unpleasant weather is a rare thing.
