peddiesake
Was thinking of making my own rat hybrid creation. Going to attach six inch Roboworm after removing tail hook via attaching a springlock to the rear. I need a big bellied slow wobbler about 2 inches and about and half ounce. I am thinking, something like the old Poe's. Anybody got any suggestions?

Okie Angler
okay so you asked for suggestions how to make a rat hybrid. i assume will be top water and you want it to look and act like a big mouse or rat. I bought about 4" mouse "fly" to try on my fly rod. but believe will be heavy enough to spin fish when it is wet. you probably have models like or similar but i will post some pics of it, dry and wet. do you want a hard body like cedar wood or is there fiber glas or plastic molded lure forms available. I have not made casting lures from scratch. depends on what materials are available as to how to proceeed. if you have a pre formed body you can purchase then add 'hair' and tail o or seem like you said apinner on rear sounds interesting have been refinishing a lot of old lures, and some newer ones. so i'm interested in your project okie

I am looking at taking an existing crank bait, probably plastic. Looking for surface swimmer with good buoyancy. Then stabilizing a slim straight tail worm after removing back hook. Looking for slow moving where head and tail move in opposite directions. I believe the tail will be the calling card that draws fish on top water to strike the body. Probably the big old Poe is the ticket if I find (but I am dating myself here). Thanks
Okie Angler
I sort of visu alize y ou want it to swim on top of surface. if so you don't want it to dive. I have some older about 3" floater River R unts but they dive when feeled in. t his one wold not be good as the darter to modify. hard to keep it fr om diving. I'm not familar with that Poe you mentioned. I have about a 5" Creek Chub darter. If reeled slowly it most ly stays on top. been long time since used it sooo not sure exactly what it coes. The one I have is a good sized solid piece of wood with a gradual taper toward the back. Caught a few good hard surface strikex on it when i highschool. I could let you have that one, if it is close to what you lookin for. also got an old , think Heddon something another, got a good sized spinner on each end, and shaped like a banana, used it bout 3 times including when i was in hischool. Good looking, sort of whitish background with sparkle and maybe shade of green I would give either of those to you. I have two or 3 other darters. Really I would be glad to give either or both of those to yuou. a lucky 13 would have a slow swim if cranked slow, the full size one or maybe the next size down. I got some old ones, not I can let any of those go. One was dad's and of course there's a big fish story, bass, river bass. I got lots of old plugs if those are too far off, be glad to try and find something for you, let me know if can help. okie
peddiesake
Okie, Extremely nice of you to offer up one of your lures. Wasn't looking for anyone to do that. I did not want to buy a half dozen different ones to get to a working prototype. Wanted to buy a fairly inexpensive one with the right action on first shot. I realize that any crank would sink but if I reel very slow it should stay near surface and the tail should make that serpentine slither near the surface. Maybe Balsa because of bouyancy would track closest to top. Looking for big breasted (like robin bird) not flat sided, not cigar shaped. Something that tracks slowly where the nose and tail move in opposite directions. An original Rapala would be the opposite of what I am after. Weight say 7/16 to 5/8 area. The idea struck me with a new rat on market (monstrous bait) that a fairly smaller rendition would work and I would not have to buy a rod with several ounce pay load or lure. As you know, it's fantastic to catch with something you make yourself. I think Poe's were it in late 70 early 80's. Now I am starting to date myself. Thanks for help.
