zak-striper
One fish, more than the size, is the important part. 1@ 28" is fine with me. Personally, I only keep about one a month because a 28"- 38" fish will provide me with plenty of filets to last a few weeks. And, I don't want to eat so much striper that I get sick of it after a while. Does anyone really need to keep one fish a day, let alone two? I get about eight to ten 3/4 - 1 lb filets from a 33" fish. Multiply that by 1 fish a day and that's 240-300 filets. Preserving the species is the important thing here. Ditch Jigger
1@28. No one needs 2@33 unless they're hosting a party or feeding an army. One 33" fish for me is enough for about six servings, three servings each for the two of use. I usually wind up freezing the third because two nights in a row, of bass, is plenty. The frozen fillets can be diced for chowder later. I actually wouldn't mind 1@34, as this would delay harvest of the 2011 year class a bit longer. 25% reduction is the minimum. States can set stricter limits. 34" is doable for most people in this state. rst3
I assume this is a rec only question. 1@28. In a perfect world, I'd vote 1@34... to get an extra breeding season in. The charter argument for their keeping 2@34 is reasonably persuasive. Personally, wouldn't want a trunk full of bass to take home off a boat, but the captains are pretty adamant their charters insist upon it. All I know is that one high teen bass in early June (bled/chilled soon after catch/filets rinsed in saltwater/& vacuum sealed) kept me with high quality fish dinners into August. Think many anglers end up wasting a ton of fish with poor handling/processing/storage post catch. Fishing kills me exactly as it keeps me alive. Totally agree, who needs to keep one fish per day?? I kept a total of 3 last year, unless it's going on the table that night for dinner, I catch and release. Personally I think fish over 36" don't taste nearly as good as 28-32. While I know most everyone's goal is to catch "a fish of a lifetime" it pains me to see huge fish caught simply for bragging rights. That being said I keep reading about the mortality rate of big fish if they are released after the fight. However, I can't tell you that I've ever seen huge, dead Stripers washing up on shore.....Has anyone thought that banning "J" hooks and treble hooks may help ease the decline in the stock immediately with less gut hooking?? Just asking.....
Skitter
If we are concerned about depleted stocks why allow one fish per day? Reasonable fishers will not keep one per day but plenty will just because they can. No idea how to regulate any of this. Would definitely cut down on the pressure the fishery faces. When the schools are pushing through the canal in June, it might be only 1 fisherman every 20 feet (instead of 10) if everyone knew they wouldn't be bringing any fish home for supper. That being said, 1 fish@ 28" is plenty. I agree with rst3 though. I'd vote for 1 @ 34.

Reasonable fishers will not keep one per day but plenty will just because they can. No idea how to regulate any of this. A fellow SOLer was at the meeting in ME the other day as they debated on how to regulated stripers in our area......the current slot 20-26 or over 40 is supposedly gonna change this upcoming season, the 28 and over was brought up as well, but let me run this by you guys.....wouldn't a small window slot benefit the species big time, assuming fisherman are honest, a 22-25 was brought up as an option, which I kinda think is a good idea leaving a large number of fish off limits, It would make trying to get a table fish a little tougher since there's a small window of keepers. I know for guides and things of that nature this might not be the best option. I dunno as a C and R guy I think if the small window for keepers is there maybe it will benefit the stock. the size could be adjusted around but doesn't that make keepers tougher to catch???? I know a lotta guys wanna take home the biggest fish in the world, I dunno just my 2 cents. GOD made my Mold different from the rest, Then he broke that mold so I know I'm Blessed. jason colby
One fish is enough. If it is 28 or 33 or 36 is not so important but the one fish is important. Cut the commercial quota in half and (try to) stop the poaching and we will be OK.....JC
