The Rev
I have been messing around with making hard plastic lures with resins. I made one similar to the SS popper with it being weighted. The only issue I am having is getting them to pop right. I had the weight at the very end where tail is and them moved it up into the body. Its a bit better there but I was wondering if there is a specific spot to put the weight so it pops correcrly...help?..here is a picture of one of the lures. Livefreeordie
I can't answer your question, but wanted to say they look good from here. Does being made out of resin eliminate needing an epoxy top coat? How did you get the mold?
The Rev
I would think the epoxty coat will be needed still to protect paint..I think? It wouldnt be needed to protect lure because the resin is completley water resistant..I made the mold out of silicone..

hpettus
Rev, how does your popper sit at rest? for my poppers I tail weight and also add a little weight just ahead of the belly hook hole.

JimmyJam
Oh boy....here we go. Â Congrats on your experiment and I'm glad it worked.
hpettus
Rev here are a few that I epoxied this morning, you can see were I put the forward weight, you might have to do some experimenting because of the difference in weight between wood and plastic, you may have to move the weight forward more or back more. For me i found that if I wanted the popper to swim also I move the belly weight forward.
luctem
I have not made many poppers, but I think (correct me if im wrong) poppers are pretty easy... 1. They need to float (once they sink, you'll have trouble getting m to the top to pop) 2. The popper needs to sit in the water in a fashion that the angle of the cup is 90 degrees with the water level. Given your angle on the head, your popper will have to sit ass down so that the cup is vertical relative to the water. 3. I always make sure the bottom of the cup is in the water, so that when i pull the water is pushed in the cup straight away. This prevents the popper from skipping on the water surface. Where you put the weight does not matter that much for the popping part i think. I have seen poppers that actually swim when retreived steadily,... these poppers will (i guess) have centered weights (belly).
Jig Man
I would place the weight behind the belly hook at the thickest part of the body. Also, you will want to use around 100% micro balloons to give the popper some buoyancy. If it is too heavy you will find it hard to keep on top. deepbluesilence
Those look great! I would like to start messing with this just haven't had the time. Not sure what type of silicone your using but a super cheap an easy way to do it is with oogoo. Look the recipe up on google. Basically you mix regular silicone with cornstarch. Stuff can be used to make a ton of stuff....I made hatch gaskets for my yak with it lol  -Jeff Hobie adventure island
The Rev
One of my favorite and most productive lure is the SS sinking model and that's what I'm trying to replicate. They don't float but still pip nice..I will take all of your advice and try it and hopefully come up with a keepa...! I am old but I'm slow.
The Rev
Micro balloons will be here Friday..They make the lure float..
Livefreeordie
Glad I got involved in this thread, because I'm learning.... So, I chased around the interwebs a bit, and I think microballoons are hollow glass space fillers that reduce the amount of resin needed and are supposed to also reduce weight. Some guy on a musky lure building site claimed they added weight, though. Have you guys used the micro b's? How do they affect weight, buoyancy, and strength in your experience?
