olvart
Surfing Bass Pro & found this. NEW Mitchell 498 Series Saltwater Spinning Reel First I have heard of it! They have the whole series from 198 to 498. "7-stainless-steel-bearing system with instant anti-reverse, a full metal body and sideplate" The vintage reels are back! Competition for the Penn Z ? lisurf2
Made in China, not France! Not the same as the old ones! Larry CarlucciGateway Striper ClubLIBBA #1258MSA #
J Wagen
Made in China, not France! Not the same as the old ones! But are they better than the old ones?
BrianBM
Another return from the dead. We'll see .... If they're going to revive an older reel, I prefer the Nautil 7500. Can't kill mine, but I'd like a longer handle.
olvart
I have no skin in the game one way or another.I was just surprised to see this offering on BP. A google of this new offering only shows them at BP. Going to the Mitchell/Pure Fishing site shows nada. Seems like a very strange way to introduce a remake of a once very popular vintage reel. The Mitchell 498 is still a very popular reel with commercial Pompano fisherman on Florida's East coast, combined with 13' glass rods. It is pretty obvious this is not a direct copy, arb & stainless bearings. But,when the Z series came out how many people complained to Penn that those things were not included? Would be cool if it was made in France,I guess, but the Chi-coms are probably more conservative than the French. Not to mention some very highly regarded reels (VS,Fin-nor Lethal,Cabo, etc) are Chinese. Tight lines......

Beastly Backlash
I am wondering how simular to the Penn Battle's it will be. redd, do you have a link to where you saw this news? Any pics?
Sweetwater
LOL, I think it has been 30 years since any Mitchell has been made in France. If I remember correctly, Browning moved production when they owned it back then. I have become too old to drink bourbon on the rocks. I will still drink it in the parking lot. Any pics? They are quite different than the Penn Battle.More like the old Penn Z series. Can't post links but go to Bass Pro & search "Mitchell 498" As I said before,no skin in the game.I have NO idea if the gear train is the same as the vintage reels. I can't find any specs. on the new version. Just kind of like to see the old reels being reborn. Now bring back the Swedish Abu Cardinal with an arb. Caught many hundreds of salmon on that reel! Sweetwater
The only thing they have in common with the original 498 is the number. I have become too old to drink bourbon on the rocks. I will still drink it in the parking lot.
Beastly Backlash
It definitely isn't modeled after the Penn Battle. But, it is in the price range of the Penn Battle, so no competition for the Z. With a graphite rotor though, the Battle might have the edge. Nice looking reel regardless. jimmy z
Casting from shore, I would use the 398. Maybe the 298 if I were tossing Bombers or smaller plugs. The only thing 498 about this new reel is the number. AKN-2 USS Sagittarius BE ENCOURAGING, NOT DISCOURAGING <*((())))>< <*((())))><
