Lars,

If you can get a hold of the book "Fly fishing for striped bass" by Rich Murphy ,I think you will be pleased with all of the information it offers.

Another good book is "Striper Moon" by J. Kenny Abrames. Both of these books are well written and have good solid information that will give you insight into the stripers world.Good luck

Peace

Rich Murphy's book will help you a lot. I don't know K. Abrames book but it is considered a classic by many. I also like Lou Tabory's book on Fly Fishing for Stripers. Another nice book is called Stripers and Streamers by Ray Bonderew.

Cape is a great place to fly fish you will have a ton of fun. The Cape is easy to get around and even for Aliens like me and you it is possible if we do our homework to find the fish.

If I could just give you one tip and that is do not run away from the wind but take it head on and you will mostly do better than fishing with a wind at your back. Many Guys shy away from the big east facing beaches big mistake especially in the fall.

I'm going to disagree on the Rich Murphy book, it's simply a total overload for a neophyte, Striper Moon , yes, Stripers and Streamers by Ray Bonderew would be my other pick, just the basics, any more is over complicating and confusing!!!

I agree with JonC. The Murphy book is huge and comprehensive and encyclopedic, it's as close to the Ultimate Striper Book as has yet been written (at least for fly anglers).

The Bonderew book is the ideal primer. Wikinglars, welcome to the Forum. Have you fished the edges of salt water in Denmark, or are you primarily a freshwater angler?

And if you find you like this fishing, and can come again, be advised that Mike Oliver comes to the US from the UK twice a year and organizes a meeting of fly anglers. We meet in Cape Cod in May and in Montauk in October. Our forum brother RJ probably knows as much as anyone about Cape Cod in September, with a fly rod; I am sure he will stop by and visit this thread.

Thanx guys

It sounds like the books Striper Moon and Stripers and Streamers are good starters, n then i can always buy the striper bible - Fly fishing for striped bass, if i fall in love. Which i think there is a huge chance i will. I live on the danish island  funen-  ca 50 km times 70 km. We only have a few larger streams that u can fish in and they don't have a lot of current, which in my world makes them unattractive, instead i go to Norway once a year to fish salmon with both one n 2 handed. On the other hand the island is filled with small streams with ideal conditions for sea run brown trout, we call them seatrout. This gives one of the best surf fishing for seatrout in europe. Since we r in the baltic sea, our highs n lows in our tides r much less than yours, between 40-80 cm difference between high n low. We fish all year round in all condition. My favorite is very windy n cloudy. seatrout get easily spooked. High season is marts-may, sep-nov. In the summer its mostly at night time trough early morning that we fish. The fishing if i have understood correctly, is very similar to your fishing. Spotting n blind casting a lot , quick n slow stripping, outgoing n incoming tide, wind direction n water temperatures depending on the place n time of year. our seatrout r average smaller than your stripers. A fish over 4 kilos is a trophy fish, the biggest on fly from the coast caught a couple a years ago was 10,3(23 pounds) kilos n 91 cm. The average i catch is around 2 pounds with a lot around 3-4 pounds n smolt-juvenils. U can find a lot of information if u want ,if u write seatrout n funen or denmark on google. Its our national fishing in denmark. In recent years fly fishing has exploded, n its now about 50 % fly n 50 % lures. Very few fish with bait after seatrout. So i think the biggest difference is the tides, which can make it a challenge for me. The casting n the wind won't be a problem. this we r very used to. I normally fish in between 13-19 mph wind n preferably in from the side so the water is rough. I thought most fished from boat in cape cod. Good to hear that u r a bunch go hard core fly surf fishers. R u many, will i meet a lot on your coast in end sep?

I agree that Rich's book is a big mouthful but Lars may not be new to fly fishing and able to digest it ok.

Mind I did find that I could not read Rich's book in one sitting as is my normal want. Some of it I could not plain follow and some made my head spin. But it is a great book and I think I can relate to the author very strongly.

Nice thing about the Cape is that if you only have a 1/4 of a fishing brain and can only cast 30 feet you can find and catch Bass on the fly rod.

Lars you are probably going to go past Fishing The Cape fly store on Route 28 it is around Denniport and the guys there are very helpful and will point you to some good spots.

I wish I could remember what I did with my copy of Striper Strategies, Secrets of a Striper Bum. You probably won't find it on Amazon. You can get it on jackgartside. Jack was great at tying, teaching, fishing, story telling as well as a bunch of other stuff. Anyhow, his books are informative without going overboard and I've read most of the others. Good luck!

I've read all the popular fly fishing for striper 'guides' and 'how to's' and can honestly say if I had to do it all over again, I would have never purchased a single one. Nothing compares to time on the water. If you're looking for reading material to keep you busy, get a book like On The Run by David DiBenedetto or Reading the Water by Robert Post. These are great stories about striper fishing that will help pass the time until Spring. I re-read them both every year. I usually try to wait until March so I don't get myself too psyched for the next season too early, but I might have to break that rule this year. :D

Thx again for all the good advice guys

U have a very nice forum. I already found a lot go useful information. Have common is fly fishing the surf in north east US. Is it bigger than from boats or the other way around. Is it only the hard core or how is the ratio between boat and boat less n then how many flyfish compared to lures/bait from the surf ?

Practical time in the water is of course the best, n it is only that much u can learn from a book. I still think i can learn something cause i have so much experience in surf fishing here in Denmark. And then its great to hype one self up agree on that one.

Speaking generally I believe that boat fishing in the USA is in numerical terms way bigger than boat. There is still a shore based fly fishing community that fishes the East coast for Stripers. Ok size and numbers wise as per usual the Boaters will always catch more and bigger. If that floats your boat then it is the way to go.

Cape Cod is a very fly friendly location and choice of mark is big from flats , back bays, esturies, South Side beaches, and the majestic east facing beaches which can be a very physical but exhiliertaing experience. From shore on days we can have large catches of twenty fish and more. It is just a different experience. Kayaking is popular to and allows access to and from the flats in a safer way.

You have options many of them.
