MorningWood
Hey guys I read some of the threads on rod recommendations but I'm still a little unsure. My son wants a new rod and reel for Christmas. We fish mostly at our lake club which is a 90 acre lake in Northern NJ. Largemouth, pickerel, crappy, perch are the predominant species. We fish from a 14 ft jon boat most of the time. I just bought him a Pfleuger President 6935B on the recommendation of several people. Now I'd like to find a nice all around rod to pair with it. He generally fishes worms and smaller crankbaits (see picture below). He loved the crankbaits FJR (on SOL) makes. Another question I have is most of the thread I've read dont discuss braid and whether some rods are better for braid than others. I haven't decided if we should put mono or braid on the President so opinions are welcome for that as well. I would like to keep the rod under $150 but could go a little higher if it's really worthwhile. howied
All my freshwater rods are st croix so that's what I would recommend as they have great warranty service. If you're willing to spend closer to 200 then definitely an avid as it is lifetime warranty that will last. Its light weight and the alconite guides will handle braid easily. I know they came out with other bass rods like the rage and eyecon, but I'm not too familiar with them. You can probably get a brand new avid for around that 150 dollar range online. Beastly Backlash
Fishing cranks and worms on the same rod can be a little tricky. But, look into the St. Croix Premier Series. Made in USA, plus 5 year warrenty with option to up grade to an Avid in the future. This rod should be a good fit and the price is right. At 7ft 6in it will work as a good shore rod too. There is also a 2-piece version avalible. Premier Spinning rod: * PS76MF 7'6" M Fast 1 6 - 12 1/4 - 5/8 4.9 6 $
Beastly Backlash
As long as the rod doesn't use micro guides, it won't matter what type of line you use. And with a quality rod, it should come with quality guides that won't get damaged from braided line.

My bait casting rod paired with the level wind is a bit stiff for me but I bought it that way for setting hook on strikes for jigs and worms. I've read about the sensitivity for worm fishing. I just watch the line and if it moves different then know fish picking it up. My rod is Ugly Stick 7 ft with a Pfleuger reel. I'm not recommending the pair or either one for your son, just joining the comments. okie
jerseycat9
St Croix mojo bass is a quality rod for a good price. I use the tubes and grubs rod for a lot of different applications from jerk baits to soft plastics and the rod has well over a 1000 stripers on it by now I'm sure and still ticking along, not bad for a 6'6 bass rod I'd say My name is Terry and I am a fisherman! Tile Guy
I highly recommend Fenwick HMG rods. You can usually pick one up for about $100-$110. By far the most comfortable grip I have ever had on a rod which can go a long ways when on the water all day.
Catfish83
I would suggest a st Croix mojo rod. Take him to outdoor store to see what rod feels right for him
