prican1
My shimano 5000FH isn't as smooth as it used to be. Taking into consideration it's age and numerous fish I'd like to make it smooth again. Did the oil and grease but still not as smooth. Thought about changing the bearings but which one and how? I use VanSaal reels 90% of the time but every now and then I like using my old spinners, any help would be appreciated.
handi2
Sometimes they just get tired..! It's usually the bearings. You can take it back apart real quick and spin each bearing and see how it does. It should spin easily with oil and no vibration or noise. If you didn't see any rust or corrosion on the outside of the bearings they probably just need cleaning an oiling. The pinion bearing is usually the one to go first unless water gets in thru the handle openings.
DerrickT
Most of my Shimano reels are going on 15 years old. They get completely stripped down and everything gets blasted with carb cleaner and then re oiled and re greased. Ive never had a problem with them and I think out of all the reels ive only ever replaced 1 bearing in my baitrunner and a couple of the pinnion bearings. If there is any type of dirt or rust on the pinnion bearings, thats most likely the problem. Sand and salt in the other bearings could be a problem too. Alpha
Did you do an entire rebuild on it? Did you grease or oil the worm? A thick grease will make it harder to turn but won't harm the reel at all. Also, did you put grease inside the pinion gear and on the spool shaft? That will also make it a little sluggish. You can wipe off some grease and use a light oil. That makes a huge difference. It's most likely the bearings. Are they shielded? If so pop the clip on them or pry out the shields (if prying, watch a video first). Soak them in carb cleaner for a little bit. Let them dry. Add corriosonx or reelx to the bearing and spin. Then pack them with Penn reel grease. If you do all of that, it should feel a lot better.
