Marty
Shimano Stella SWB STL5000SWBXG Saltwater Spinning Reel $1050.00 Vs. Shimano stella F $780.00. I want to get a reel for stripers. I know the SWB is more for large fish like tuna. I will be using this reel only on my boat. What reel should I get? Is the $780 shim. Reel going to hold up ? Like to hear your input. Thank you. mike3dr
I'm no expert, but its my understanding that SW is for Salt Water and F is for Fresh water. Hope that helps
Rock
You'll be fine using the freshwater version from boat. I have a pair of Stella FDs I've been using from both boat and shore for roughly 5 years and have no issues. What I like most about the freshwater Stellas other than the price is the light weight. Save your money and your arm, you won't be disappointed.

Not to deter you from Stella, however, at that price range have you looked at Daiwa Saltiga or Isla/Catalina. You might be pleasantly surprised. I was. Alpha
If you blindfolded 100 fishermen and handed them a stradic and a stella most would not be able to tell you which was the nicer reel. Ever hear of the law of diminishing returns? For stripers there is really no point in buying that nice of a reel.
Lucky
I got a stella swpg a few weeks back. Nicest reel I have ever fished with. "Lucky" is a fictional character on the interwebs. drc
I got a stella swpg a few weeks back. Nicest reel I have ever fished with. I've been shopping around for that exact reel. You'd think they would have come down in price with the SWB out. Not Cheap
Lucky
Not many shops have that reel. I had to order it from a shop up in Mass. "Lucky" is a fictional character on the interwebs. Charleston
The previous model Stella SW 5000 is a perfect reel for what you are looking to do. They are available from time to time on the BS&T. I am old but I'm slow.

For striped bass you don't need tuna gear. In the Canal maybe something like this is justified with the heavy jigging and huge current but not your average situation. That being said I would love a pair of stellas, one 5000 and one 10000, but they are out of my price range. Island livin
Marty
The SWPG. What does the PG mean ? It's going on a 7 ft st croix rod. I like smaller reels then big. Is the. 5000 good size? My tackle shop doesn't carry them so I will be ordering on line without seeing it
Lucky
PG is the slowest of the Stella models. The 5000 and the 6000 are the same size. The 6000 holds more line. Do your research before you drop the grand. "Lucky" is a fictional character on the interwebs. Nothing "Lucky" says or does can be or should be construed as a real thought by an actual person. gantz88
PG means power gear or lower gear ratio so you can reel heavier things with more ease? There's also XG, which is just extra gear or higher gear ratio for faster retrieve but less power. Depend on the species you're targeting, the new Stella (not SW2013) is good for salt water as well. I have the SW2013 4000xg for striper fishing, but I think the new Stella size 4000 is a sturdier built one when I saw it. If you want to fish light and not looking to target big fish in fast current than I don't see a probem with size 4000 shimano. I get about 150-180 yards of 30lb suffix832 or power pro. -edit Just saw you're pairing it with a 7' so I would high recommend the new Stella size 4000 (highest size for that model) 5000 would would but a big heavier and bigger. Besides, the former recommendation is cheaper than the SW2013 5000
Marty
Shimano make so many reels in there Stella. I'm seeing this one for only. $350 new on e bay. I though they were. $1000 reel ? I don't get it. It's the shimano Stella sw 5000.
