Slacker
Cold here too. Low 20s at night, but it has only been that way for a few days. The water is still in the mid to upper 50s. The fishing should be pretty much the same as it has been recently. Personally, I'd kind of look for the area of the lake that gets the most morning sun and fish it in the afternoon. When I say "personally", it really should be "theoretically" 'cause sitting for 3-4 hours on a kayak in 30F air temps just ain't my thang. I'm having trouble even getting motivated to sit in a deer stand in a full down coverall. When we get back to the 50s in a week or two, I might give fishing a shot. Sweetwater
I fish all winter long for bass and trout. I have always preferred small ponds in the winter over the summer because the fish really do hit better in 45 degree water than 85. When we get a couple of warm days in a row in February, I go looking for the largest fish of the year staging in 6-10 feet of water preparing for the spawn. There are many good wintertime fisheries around the country, and we haven't had really cold weather yet. I have become too old to drink bourbon on the rocks. I will still drink it in the parking lot. Bring a fire extinguisher.

Paul_M
think read about fishin with smaller lure types and slow slow in winter your thoughts on that? okie You have a shot at 50F or below. The 50-60 F range has always proved futile to me, but I hate hard jerk baits. Smaller and slower AND lighter line for the baits that are attempting to get a feeding strike. 4lb when fishing hair jigs for smallies. If you're fishing jigging spoons or any kind of metal that's a reaction strike so you gotta drop it down to the bottom and vigorously pop it. Swimming it along lazily is a waste of time. Get on your recorder and fish the intersections of the creek channels, the deepest part of a point, submerged weeds, brush piles, rock piles and the like. See you on the big one. FishermanTim
That's not an easy question to answer. If you have safe ice, you could target both species. Of course they don't tend to school together so they would be targeted in different regions of a given body of water. If you are fishing open water you would do pretty much the thing. The other concern might be what bait to use or which lure to choose. Hopefully you have fished the waters you plan on hitting, so that you have a basic knowledge of the pond/lake/river/stream. Good luck!! I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy!

Find a lake with a power plant, sat map where the warm water comes out, and go as close as you can down river from that..
